HI All,
I am in the early stages of building a 30V PSU. I have a 24 vac transformer with 2 secondary windings, a bridge rectifier and some caps. I have (I think!) centre tapped the 2 windings from the transformer. It's a German jobby from Maplins and has 2 black wires which are the primary (Connected to 230v) one secondary which is red and yellow and another which is blue and green. I have connected and grounded the yellow and blue to centre tap the transformer. When testing the voltage from Green to Red I have a reading of 57 volts, which is probably a little high due to the fact it is idle and incoming voltage a bit above 230v. When tested from the centre tap to the red or green I get 28.5 vac. This all makes sense to me - the problem I have is that when I connect this up to the bridge rectifier I don't get a voltage jump of 1.41. The output cables from the transformer (RED/GREEN) are connected to the 2 terminals on the rectifier with the ac markings but when testing the +/- terminals on the rectifier I am getting a reading of 52 vdc... Any thoughts?

Thanks for the swift reply, guys. I have now got the caps in place and am getting 39.6 v which makes perfect sense. This, though, presents me with a further issue - I actually need a 30 volt supply... What's the recommended way to reduce the voltage and keep it smooth?

you could even use those regulators with trim pots if you wanted. A tip, Id bypass the rectifier with 100nf caps, does make a difference. If its not too late you could use two bridge rectifiers.
