I've no doubt many of you have seen this MASSIVE thread on diyaudio
    http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31123
But are these guys really onto something? (I haven't just broken a rule here have I mods?)
I mean, if it's half as good as they're making out, why haven't old PS1 prices rocketed? And how on earth can ony make such an amzing soudning piece of kit by accident and still not charge anything like hi end prices. Could this be a bit of sonic-t like hype? Either way, I think I'm goin to track down an early one and give it a go, with

To be honest I don't see anything in there that is so great. Best off buying a Sony CD player from Richer Sounds I would think, since it probably has less noise on the power lines without all those computer chips.

so, are they going on a wild goose chase? Surely they wouldn't be putting all that effort in if it wasn't vaguely rewarding.
    Must admit I'm sceptical though

All I mean is I can't see any particularly good components in there. It probably does sound pretty good, as do most CD players these days! Whether it sounds better than a CD player, say, over £500 I am very sceptical of though.

Going by the tutorial website you posted, they are not really going to great efforts. Except for the linear power supply, all of it is pretty simple stuff.

Or just get a CD63 and mod away, very easy to get very good performance

Perhaps a case of 'Emperors new clothes' , where people are getting carried away - as seen before with Superdac (to a little extent), NOS-DAC (greater extent), T-amp, beresford DAC, behringer DEQ......

All great bits of kit, don't get me wrong, but praised to the high heavens upon receiving a popular online following, and subsequently hyped as the best thing ever by some, but then seemingly not quite the sonic nirvana first realised?

I dont think you can call anything unless you try it first. The Behringer is all what its cracked up to be. The Beresford well I dont know but it is on so many forums i have to give people the benefit of the doubt. Diy Audio forum is very good as is this and others and without them we would lost for info on products. Jim.

It reminds me somewhat of the 'New Tube' (ah Nu Tueb or similar), and other valve CDP's and DACs that have appeared.

I got my CAL valve dac for about £400 (about 4 years ago), and like it's presentation more than solid state dacs I have heard - it has a non-artificial sound about it.

Perhaps it's the addition of valves, and attention to the power supply that has changed the sound into something they like.

I can't help but wonder if something like the 'new tube' cdp would do just as well.

Apparently the PS has some DSP that remains active even when playing CDs. Designed to make games sound better, it adds some slight reverb or something like that to make it sound bigger than life. Maybe this is what they like?
