Many of the hi-fi magazines come under attack these days, seen increasingly as comics not catering for a very changed market.

HFN was always a favourite in the early days but had became increasingly stale until recently IMO.

These days it really reminds me of the better days for hi-fi mags, with some good investigative articles and no fear of giving a bad review when deserved.
You can also download the full test results from Paul Miller's Lab assessment and these are more comprehensive than usual.

Keith Howard and Jim LeSurf are both excellent and well worth reading, and the current issue looks at the con of hi resolution downloads that aren't, and some good work on jitter. Plus some good retro stuff on Jim Rogers and the 149 speaker.

Well, it got my subscription back after 20 years.

I very much enjoyed their exposure of HDtracks and Linn.

Shame they were a year late to the party, I pointed out HDtracks were full of crap over 12 months ago on computer audiophile.

Agreed. I think that HFN now edges out HFW, which I always preferred for its excellent articles on vintage gear, as well as a half-decent readers letters section.

For me, HFN now has the best overall balance of coverage (including a more than reasonable music section), and of course the enigma that is Ken Kessler ;)

It seems like the change of ownership has allowed PM to make the necessary changes to the mag, but I'll bet Joseph £100 that you will not see at HFN organised show at Heathrow for the forseeable future. Shall we say 3 years?

Getting them to exhibit/sponsor the Silverstone show would be a lot easier now that the politics have gone.

    Hi,

The change in Hifi News happened over in 2009, before the switch in ownership.

    I too like the change.

I would be surprised if the HiFi News show can back this year or next.

We'll always look at any event that promotes the industry but it's always a balance between costs and visitor numbers. To do a show properly, there's not much change out of £20K so you really need to be sure of attendance.

What do people think about the option of AudioSmile exhibiting with a static display in the trade areas of a show, rather than a demo room?

My first thought is that people need to hear the products so a demo room is the only option.

Actually I'm not sure this is the case though, because you can never gain a proper idea of the sound from a show room since the place is so noisy, and many other problems. I think really, meeting the people who make the products and seeing / handling the item is the important part, and you can still do this in the display area. The cost is significantly lower and it means we could spread attendance across more shows for the same outlay.

If you do - They'll moan due to the poor sound (even if it's the room)

If you dont - They'll moan because you didn't make the effort

So, we turn up, have a good time, chat to many a folk and listen to some good music. But never take anything too seriously.

surely guys, it is not about how good my "TOYS" sound that is where it all went wrong, to show your products and make the people that attend the show or your rooms feel welcome and entertained, sound i know will never be perfect,. i think joe public knows that,
