    Hi everybody!

first off apologies for the long post!

my names Tim, and i come here looking for recommendations :)
I'm looking for a Pre-amp for my system - ideally under £200, used is fine!

My current setup is optical from my PC > entech 205.2 DAC > Behringer DCX (used as a crossover only) > Technics SU-X series integrated with pre-ins > custom speakers half built

this will become; Decent soundcard > pre-amp > monoblocks > finished DIY speakers, and first up i want a new pre-amp!

I listen to ALL sorts of music, from classical to pop, metal to funk. I want something very non-fatiguing, smooth and clean.

Want any more info, just ask!

    Thanks

    Tim

For the money, I'd think about a simple passive.

I'd agree with that and if you can stretch to £300, you can get quite a few to consider I think...
Also, have you considered a kit?

yeh, got a 201 for £120, which i think i'll be very happy with as it frees up some money for a 203 dac and a matching transport and some meridian monoblocks, looks like i'll also be working overtime this summer

    Hi David :)

    Well, current stage is:

We're on the market and I started my new role up in Harrogate 2 weeks ago. So we're fully paid up members of The Friends Of The M1! :D

I can't tell you how exhausting it is. The house now looks like something I'd like to live in though, rather than the building site I managed to make it look like while I was doing all the various 'projects'... the kitchen looks great! Don't want to move now :)

My hi-fi and records/CDs are still here too, which means not much listening time :(

For the money there is a guy in Thailand who does a TVC style preamp for about £400. Great if you are using short IC lengths and don't mind the made-in-the-shed look.
Not too sure of the name BUT I'm sure someone here will know.

    Promethius TVC?

    I bought one 2nd hand for £125.

Very impressed with it sound wise.
I ran it up against a TVC made using Supermalloy Transformer Attenuator's and high quality switches and there was stuff all difference. Tonal balance really. Perhaps the Supermalloy's let though even more bass - something I do not need.

I could not live with the redwood colour so sprayed it silver... oh and put some decent knobs on it.
    Pic of it

Hifi collective have a very nice passive kit with a stepped pot for around the £200 mark. You can also upgrade it to tvc or buy the tvc version instead http://www.hificollective.co.uk/kits/glasshousehome.html i bought the stepped pot kit and it sounds very good indeed and has top notch build quality.I later upgraded mine to full tvc and the sound is better still.
