My dads 1995 N REG escort window has stopped working, it closed but it was very very slow so you can't open it due to chance it may not work again.

Does anybody know how much it would cost including labour to replace the motor?

If you do have to replace the motor they're usually horrendously expensive. No idea about an Escort but I'd guess at close to £100. They're about £250 for my BMW

Michael.

Pop the inside door panel off and lube the mechanism as has already been suggested. Also check out all of the electrical connections, 12 volts DC isn't that high a voltage and therefore it wouldn't take an awful lot of corrosion on a dodgy connection to slow things down, I used to have a small Jap motorbike with 6v electrics so i know all about dodgy corroded electrics. Break and make all of the visible plugs a few times, also ensure the flexible wiring harness between the door pillar and the door isn't damaged, there is a lot of flexing and so a wire can easily get broken/damaged increasing its resistance.
You should be able to pick a replacement motor up from a local scrappy for peanuts, nowadays they often have these types of components on the shelf.

If you take the motor out and force your way into it, you'll probably find it all glubed up. Clean it out and stick in new grease, then bodge some way of sticking it together, I think I used tape and afew dabs of glue. Door was still working two months ago when the was lost to the family

Thanks, I reckon you all on to somthing here, the central locking on the drivers door dosn't work either because the connections have all rusted out, I am guessing it may the same problem with the electric window motor. The garage said it would cost £140 including labour to replace the loom but as it was just the central locking it didn't seem worth it.

I have actually not seen the what the window is doing but my dad described it, he dosn't want to use it again in the fear of it getting stuck.

Ok my dad accidently pressed it the window button today and now its totaly stuck. The panels are also known to be a right twat to get off on Escort MK7's too.

Also as the car is running well my dads wants to get the MOT done now while he is busy with his business and have lots of money rather than wait till after Christmas when we my parents can barely afford the mortage.

Does anybody know if a window that will not open is an MOT failutre?

i don't think they are otherwise something like some westfields, caterhams, ariel atom or the renault spider would be illegal.
should check it though.
cheers

But couldn't their be somthing like if it has windows fitted? Its like an 1972 Morris Minor without a catallitic(sp) convertor is pefectly legal but any car made after 1992 it isn;t.

I got the panel off tonight, I put my multimetre to the connector and got a reading. I reckon I could screw the motor of the window machansim and just replace that, but if you have to replace the entire machanism it looks a bastard of a job even for a machanic, I have no chance.

There wasn't any way to lift it up either, the cables were too just too tight.

The motor should come out. then you could try either opening it and cleaning it up inside, it'll probably be full of gunk, or looking for one of of a scrapper. I'd lay odds that most recentish Fords have the same motor, economy of scale

Thanks, this is a 1995 N Mk7. I know the motor is made by Siemems. I am going to the library this afternoon to get a Haynes manual. The motor is going to be quite fidely to get out because its behind a welded shield and its fixed the machanism with allen keys but I reckon I can get it off with a bit of patience. I am also going to test the switch first as well in case the up contact has gone.

No the motor is rivetted onto the door, I wasn't going to start drilling into it as I don't really know what I am doing. It is the motor but my dad has just had to put some clear flablon over the window at the moment to keep the rain out.

The exhaust is about to fall off now too. I some times think the car is a duffer but I suppose its normal for a £1600 car (what we paid two years ago) to go wrong from time to time, it hasn't been near a garage for for 8 months (about 7000 miles) so I guess its not too bad.

Mot

I MOt'd a car for several years with a non-working drivers window - not a problem. I only used the car for occassional road use, mainly a track car so it never bothered me.
