My house!
I've had a decent offer on my EE Minimax CD player. Trouble is the buyer, who I've just spoken to on the phone, is unsure about payment. I said send me a cheque or bankers draft and when it clears I'll ship the CDP all nicely packaged and insured. He is not sure and has offered to send me half the value and the rest when the player arrives.

I've never done business this way and am unsure.

Any ideas?

My advice would be dont do it,even if they recieve it there will be something wrong with it and "can they pay you less ?" Its arrived dented or scratched. Its not worth it.

Hi,

I would wait until you have all the cash before you send it off. Get him pay via cheque, bankers draft, bank transfer or cash. You could use paypal but be aware of the charges. You need to agree on who covers these. Make sure the funds have cleared.

If you don't know him, don't send the unit off with part payment. You may get hassle like Colin has mentioned.

When you sell something you should state you conditions of sale. If he is unsure, he needs to pop round to yours to see the cd player in the flesh. Then he could haggle a deal. If you don't want to deal, tell him so.

Stick to what you want as you are selling.

Unfortunately he cannot 'pop' round as he is in Surrey and I am in N. Ireland. I'll happily keep the minimax in it's box till someone buys it or I can part exchange with some nice dealer for a new TT ;)

yeh don't even consider it.

any buyer who is truly trustworthy would consider a seller to be the same. a lack of trust on his part shows he not worthy of your full trust.

Don't even accept a cheque, only bankers draft or electronic transfer into your account.

Well looks like I'm keeping the Mingymax....here's the reply.

'Hi Steve, the problem I have with this is that the trust is all on my part and whilst I'm sure you're honest, I'm not willing to risk £600.00. I take what you say about your rating on the web forums, but I just can't rely on that. The only solutions I can think of are:

1. Don't some couriers do C.O.D. ?
2. Is sending the package to your friends in London a non starter ?

Regards,'

If he won't send the payment up front, then the only thing is for him to collect. If he can't do that then as I far as I'm concerned it is "no sale".

But you've decided to hang on to it anyway so this is all moot.

If I were the buyer, I wouldn't want to do business with a seller I couldn't trust completely.

Zygote, some people are simply unable to trust anybody. They are the same people who tend to feel they have been ripped off if they can't reduce the price a bit over what's been agreed to. Avoid, they're more trouble than they're worth. You'll find another buyer eventually, and even if that buyer pays a few bob less, it'll be the better deal.

Wouldn't it help to do it with Paypal, in that each end is covered somehow? I haven't looked in detail but I always assumed this was so.

I won't use paypal for transactions of more than a few quid. Their fees are just too much and they rarely protect the seller if the buyer decides to say 'no package received'.

At the moment I am content to keep the Minimax in it's box in the hope that when I finally pluck up the balls and finance to go for an Ace Space Deck or Michell that my local hifi guy will look favourably upon it and my Project xperience in part exchange.

Who knows I may even put the Mingymax upstairs!

Oh and thanks guys for the advice. I am generally a rather trusting sort of person. I never sell anything without a no quibble money back guarantee and have only had positive feedback on the forums as well as ebay and discogs. Lately though anything I've tried to sell seems to attract some odd scammers or just general oddballs lol

you need to post items that have tracking enabled (where buyer has to sign for parcel)...if you send out something small (for example) - then recorded postage is not enough, you have to use special delivery...

recorded postage is a waste of time.

I send everything signed for and insured and first class special delivery where possible. Paypal will still take money from my account if the buyer cries wolf and I have to deal with that loss until I prove that the package was delivered.

It is much easier to swap phone numbers and do a direct bank transfer of funds.
