Because we wants it...
I was just thinking about the film A.I. today and wondering if aliens will dig us up from the ice of our spent planet and just think we had riches built up over billions of years that we just squandered in 300 years or so. We were short sighted, feudal and vain, not civilised and progressive, we don't even plan for 30 years ahead - look at the dwindling reserves of oil. Wherever mankind sets their feet its rarely for the better, the good things only happen when we fix something we probably screwed up in the first place. The cat story got me down this line of melancholia. We're lost.
