Nearly a foot on our drive,

In the words of Ogden Nash

Snow is snowy when it's snowing
but it's slushy when it's gowing

Tom, just remember ...

The more it snows
(Tiddely pom)
The more it goes
(Tiddely pom)
The more it goes
(Tiddely pom)
On Snowing.
And nobody knows
(Tiddely pom)
How cold my toes
(Tiddely pom)
How cold my toes
(Tiddely pom)
Are growing.

So, wear warm socks.

Start snowing up here too, its more sleet but the ground is white so it must have stuck during the night. I have to into university later as well which is not fun as it involves a long walk through Peel park for anybody that knows the area.

we had almost an inch in Tow Law, tho the surround areas were mearly frosty...

keep that shite up north thank you very much. snow should be illegal - except for the first half of christmas day. it should then be melted by the council using jet engines. it's brisk but sunny down here.
cheers

We had some ACTUAL SNOW in Exeter this morning! Well, a little bit of a snow shower on the walk into work anyway - quite a special experience since the last time I remember snow HERE was around 1986! ...and it started snowing while I had a classic Sunscreem track on the discman, so quite a nice way to spend that traumatizing experience of having to go to work :)

...but usually, I'm with Julian, although I don't condone the waste of fuel that jet engines would cause. Maybe getting fat people to eat it for a week would be better for everyone!

How far North do you want? We've had no proper winter to speak of in Southern Scandinavia - mostly horrible rain and winds. I should be skiing this time of year! Mind you I'm only a bit north of Scottish islands by latitude.

which reminds me....

....A young polar bear came into his den and asked his mother, "Mom am I a real polar bear?"
"Of course you are." His mother replied.
The young polar bear asked his father. "Dad, am I a real polar bear?"
"Yes, you are a real polar bear."
A week passed and the young polar bear asked his parents, "Are grandma and grandpa real polar bears?"
"Yes" said his parents.
Another week passed and the young polar bear asked his parents, "Are all my relatives real polar bears?"
"Yes, they are all real polar bears." Said his parents. "Why do you ask?" replied his mother.
"Because," said the young polar bear,"I'm freezing!

Well, I had 2-3 inches settled on the car this morning, and it's been snowing most of the day here in oldham. No doubt where I live out in the styx it's worse as it's always a few degrees colder there...

No snow here on the south coast.
Once evry three years or so we get a dusting of the stuff. And thats it.
It is fun for the kids when it does; tobagoning on the South Downs. :)

Freezing wet December then:
Bloody January again!

Very little here. In fact, winter in Zürich is starting to resemble winter in Melbourne (where a very cold day is 8°C). I hear that the Bundesamt für Verkehr (Federal Transport Ministry) has started checking the higher altitude cable car towers. They were built in the assumption that the ground in which they were placed would always be in a state of year-round permafrost. This assumption is starting to look shaky (hopefully only the assumption).

The snow's stopped and the sun is out and I'm living in a Winter Wonderland. The mountains at the end of the Strath are white flutings of Alpine majesty. Absolutely stunning views. The woods across the Strath are greeny grey lacework against the white. Incredible.

Just as well I don't have to go out though. More snow this evening

Its just miserable and wet here. Looked like it was starting to snow about lunchtime but now its just a steady cold drizzle :(

[Edit: ... and just as I hit the enter key - on comes the snow - big white snowy gobs of it]

Tom,

Up in the far North do people change over to snow tyres for the winter? My in-laws live in the Westerwalt, Germany and everyone there has two sets of tyres. How about yous?

Just curious in a British 'leaves on the tracks' sort of way.

When I lived in Portland (in Oregon in the US) most people (including me) used snow tyres (well snow tires actually ;) ) with metal studs in them during the winter months. Far more effective than chains, and you aren't restricted to 30mph like you are with chains. Also you don't have to arse about fitting them and then removing them like chains. Only downside was the noise they made on dry roads.

They're banned in many places because they do damage the roads. The highway out to Mt Hood in Portland has to be resurfaced often as a set of grooves made by snow tyres in the winter develops over time.

I would have a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on them for my car if I lived anywhere where it snowed regularly during the winter. Normal tyres (even with full tread depth) are hopeless in the snow.

Michael.
