John Dowland

OK folks, I bought rock musician Sting's John Dowland record.
John is dead. Sting is rich. I am poor.
Has anyone else heard it? Any opinion on Dowland?

 

I don't think Sting is the man to be singing this stuff, to be honest. I've heard the album, and he just sounds awkward with the material a lot of the time.

 

I heard him (on Radio 3, I think) doing his Dowland thing. Much praised in certain quarters (Gramophone?) where it was thought that this was probably a pretty authentic approach. I had to turn it off after 10 minutes. Glad I hadn't bought the CD - I had been tempted to.

 

I'm more of a Byrd man myself - especially now, thanks to Sting.

 

Whilst I admire Sting taking on something like singing Dowland, I must admit it is the first classical music for ages that made me burst out laughing (I listened to tracks from the DG (?) web-site.)
