Life

Drugs, rock 'n roll, and f*cking in the streets
sounds like a typical day at work for me a few years back
seriously if i find myself getting into a rut i go find a quiet out of the way spot and just chill out for a few hours, its amazing how just staring out to sea for a few hours recharges the batterys

Try to eliminate all causes of personal pain.Learn and observe yourself and others in situations, and avoid those in which you become over stressed. Notwithstanding those beyond your control.
All that's left will be good, and become a realist, recognise that the world is 'biased' 80% to go wrong, Murphy's law, and you won't be suprised when it does. It WILL not go as you want it to, 3/4 of the time. That is life, not pessimism.
And as Chris says, a lot of the bullshit comes through via the papers, news, mags., TV, it is all by and large negative, fear inducing, simplistic information lacking gossip, and I think has a REAL subliminal effect, far more insidious and powerful than people realise.
Rome is the mob, Britain is the mob, Sun rules ok, lager, chav, and neanderthals everywhere. The media pander to the mob and the insitutions and upper classes, all that is left is the 'middle' classes who are really workers. Unless you are in, you are out, and subject to a life of desire, and aspiration.
If you are not a footballer, pop singer, or TV actor/ presenter, you are a nobody, always will be, and the message is you are less than adequate.
This is part the reason for the inherent unhappiness, the looking up to those who have, and seeing how we don't have enough cash for what we want. When that is blasted every day in the media, one cannot help become affected. See this, and learn to adapt. Try Buddhism. Life can be a bitch, then there is death to look forward to. Balance of what you know makes you feel good, and what must be done.
We work to have enough to spend on food, drink and sleep, to have the energy so we can work, in order to buy food, to give energy to work....in order to...

The way I see it, life is split between the times when you're *living*, and the times you're *existing*

Living is when we're doing what we want. And existing is when we're doing all the crap that's needed to live. Seems we spend MOre time doing the existing thing though  The balance is all wrong and I hate that compromise!

I guess it comes down to making sure that when you're *living* it makes the *existing* worthwhile.

Some people seem happy to work. When you ask them what they want to do, they'll mention a career. But to me working is simply a means to an end. A means to get MOney for the ends that is to spend that MOney and live!

mo last year i was feeling pretty simaler to you,the girlfriend had moved back to the states, the job i was doing payed very well but was no longer fun,and the area i lived in was getting very unpleasant.i saw a job advertised that apealed, even though it ment a fairly substantial pay cut,and a couple of steps down the career path, out of curiosity i applied, after all they were paying for travel expenses so i'd get a few free days by the seaside if nothing else. i ended up getting the job,8 months down the line im now wondering why i didnt make the move sooner,im enjoying the work again ,i've more money in the bank and have a much better quality of life. And yes it does still involve the ocasional bit of Drugs, rock 'n roll, but not so much sex(well im getting old)

Madhippy makes a very sane point. It's about mantaining a balance and not becoming unhappy or feeling trapped in work.
I can't offer you a solution MO, I do know how you feel, because I've been there myself a few times. My solution was pretty radical (about 12K Km radical), but the solution for you probably isn't.
It does sound like a change of atmosphere could be a good thing, though. If only for a week or two.
