Ive just bought myself a sony x series mp3 player and I already had some sony in ear headphones to use with it, which are fairly decent.

Im considering upgrading the headphones to some larger over the head headphones (as long as they aren't too big).

Ive actually got my eye on the Denon AH-D1001's.

Can anyone recommend any good headphones over (or even less) than £100?

Is this likely to be a worthwhile upgrade for me?.

Thanks. Alex.

Depends on what sound you like - if punchy/dynamic is your thing I'd try Grados SR 60 or 80 is fine but also have a look here www.iheadphones.co.uk/sennheiser/421/60-100.htm
for a nice selection. If you're a Grado sort of person there's a pair of Grado 325s over on Pink fish classifieds for £100 which is a very big bargain indeed..

Im more interested in over head headphones...

I could be persuaded to buy in ear headphones however if they are more suitable and have enough pro's.

Im currently looking into Audio Technica ATH ES7s which are supposed to sound good and have good bass (not that im only interested in bass).

Also Audio Technica AD700s which are supposed to have good mid tones and highs as well as seperation and detail.

grado's beyers do it for me ...should get a damn good pair for that money .

might be too good for the mp3 player though

your biggest problems using serious cans with portable music are (IME)

1) Background noise (train/bus/traffic etc)
2) Whether the amplifier in the device is sufficiently powerful/sounds good enough for the headphones.

Try therefore to get headphones with either excellent Passive or Active noise cancellation, and additionally make sure that they can easily be driven by the mp3 player. If not, you will need a headphone amp which will increase the price/decrease the portability of your set-up.

just remember you wont be able to use the noise cancelling function if you get other headphones.
This function proved very effective on a recent flight to egypt(better than Bose NC headphones i've tried).

etymotic 6i

hi from the US,

the etymotics are in-ear and isolate VERY well. my daughter has them and loves them. i also have grado SR60s and they are a true bargain. corey greenberg was right in his stereophile magazine review.

below is a website here in the us and you may have to search for a uk site, i dont know how those things work out.
