If someone is speaking (not rapping) in a song then I'm more likely to be able to "automatically comprehend" it, but otherwise the voice is just instinctly "heard" by my brain as an instrument. I guess I'm rare though, as most people IME hate instrumental music, find it boring and "need" words to keep them interested - a piece of music isn't complete for them without words - maybe because they can't place a context or meaning without words to guide them. I'm just not a words oriented person, simple as that I guess, which somehow filters through transparently into my music listening habits.Originally posted by domfjbrown
I've got to be honest - I don't understand how people can focus on the voice as an instrument; I've never heard it like that, which is why I hate choral and operatic (in the main) works. Eeeeuk!
If someone's singing something, I'm compelled to listen to what they're singing
Mind you, understanding the words of song isn't always the be all and end all for liking a piece of music. Two example I can think of which we both like would be Desireless "Voyage voyage" and that one by Offra Haza (or however you spell her name).
I suppose it pays to know what people are singing about sometimes, after all, the consequences of not knowing the question that Lady Marmalade pose in their classic 70's disco tune could be quite amsuing if you end up singing the chorurs to someone who didn't intend to in a club!
What style of music is Arab Strap, MO?
