My amp has a captive lead, and (for convenience mainly) i wanted to change to an iec connector for the mains cable. Is there a way of doing this internally, or would i have to wire a male socket on to the end of the captive lead?

You can get IEC sockets from most electronic suppliers.
Means opening up the unit and cutting a suitable hole

expensive but neat method, buy a proper hole punch
cheapskate way, drill a hole big enough to take a hacksaw blade were the plug is going insert hacksaw into hole and cut away,or cut loads of small holes to roughly the correct size and then file away all the little bits until the plug fits, attach the splug to the case with some 3.5mm nuts and bolts
connection wise use the exesting cable
