Making interconnects

What cable would i need to make interconnects? I read somewhere that you can use speaker cabling, is this correct? I'm not too interested in spending £30+ on interconnects, but stock ones are SLIGHTLY crappy, so was wondering would making my own from decent(ish) cheap speaker cable be a better improvement??
