I was reading the thread on regulated power supplies and record surface noise when I remembered the following.
Many years ago I was visiting a small post sound recording studio and while I was waiting to discuss my requirements with the engineer I was listening very intently to what he was doing.
He was playing "Snowflakes are Dancing " by Tomita and it sounded terrific. The turntable was a 301 that had been modified so that instead of the pick-up arm being lowered onto the record, the deck was raised up to meet the arm. The arm looked a bit Heath-Robinson and had the cartridge Araldited directly to the end of the arm tube. The sound was coming from a pair of Tannoy Reds in largish cabinets mounted on a shelf at one end of the small room.
Having just lashed out on a new cartridge for my home system (a Shure M something or other) I was very intrigued to know what cartridge he was using that made such nice sounds.
A Goldring G800 he answered.
I've just bought a Shure......(and much more expensive) cartridge I said.
Well he said it depends on what you like listening to.
If you want to hear the music get a G 800.
If you like listening to clicks and pops stay with the Shure.
Funny what you remember isn't it.

having said that apart from the sure v15, the biggest selling cart was the m75ed

I also have a Lenco so might stick the G800 on it and record some Dub for you at the weekend.
