Thinking of picking up one of these 2nd hand for around £150.

Does anybody have one, how do they compare to the more recent cd players?

I don't have one/haven't heared one but they seem to have a following. Good tackle with reputatadly anologue sound.

Watch spare parts though.

Have you looked at audioreview?

Very nice CD player. smooth and warm sounding. you won't be disappointed. for £150 its a bargain. They are pretty old now, but as long as its working just sit back and enjoy the music.

I have a 206 and love it, looks great, sounds great through my Proceed AVP and Bryston 3BST. Currently playing Electric Ladyland and its far out man !!

I had one too - my first proper cd player.
After a couple of horrors from Technics and Marantz, it made me realise that cd players do have their place. It taught me that good ones can do the tricks with imaging and soundstaging and warmth nearly as well as expensive analogue, and that the previous ones had been harsh and flat.
BTW I sold mine for around ?350 about 5 yrs ago so in respect of the dosh I'd say: a) that the one in question seems sensibly priced b) they hold their value respectably.
I'm sure you wouldn't regret the plunge at this price!

Thanks for the input. I missed out on the one I wanted but am on the outlook for another. If anybody has one let me know!

I found this thread from Google, so I've joined the forum.

Yeah I've got one I think it's the original.
I bought it secondhand way back probably 1990 for something like £500. I have the box manual and even the packing box. I got a phillips remote a little later. onr of the rubber feet came off but I got some sorbuthane things for it and it has a platform thing under it too. When Minidisc came in it aquired an optical lead to direct record. At some piont I added a 203 bitstream dac. It sounds ok but y'know you get used to things.
It won't read the disc from standby mode so I have to turn it off then on with the switch on the back - any idea how to sort that out ????
It goes through a Cyrus 2 PSX (which also needs servicing) to some Theil 1.5 speakers ... I've also got Michell Gyrodec which is pretty.
It's not worth much but it does the job and I don't listen to it that often I guess I should rationalise the whole lot with my tv and av stuff but it's what to keep and what sell.

I've got one! Am listening to it now and it's lovely, more musical and much less harsh....yipeeee!

I still have one knocking around the place somewhere. Excellent machine but be aware that when the ancient CDM4 mech dies you have scrap. In all honesty a modestly priced modern machine can sound at least as good.

I remember you buying yours rob... what have you replaced it with and why?

I'm thinking of trying out a Quad 99 CDP2 myself

(sorry for the minor hijack)

It depends on what you mean by modest. I've been using a rotel rcd-02 (with a beresford dac) which is a but clinical but to my ears the 206 beats it by the virtue of being more musical and involving. Still not as good as vinyl though

In case anyone is interested, I found a contemporary review ..here you go:

I'm talking Rega Apollo level.

My 206 is the TD1541 verson.
