Hi,

Ms sister has just mailed with this request

"Hi Dave,

I have a query for you.

As you know we have rearranged the living room with a new fireplace and a new dresser unit to the left to take the TV and (eventually) the Hi Fi system. ........

I am wondering, with modern developments in "bookshelf speakers", would there be something that would perform just as well as our big black boxes but be much smaller. I am not looking for perfection as I rarely have time to sit and listen to music for its own sake. However, I would like something at least as good as the big black ones and I presume they need to be compatable with the amplifier. I saw some called Tannoy Mercury F1 custom (see link below) which seemed to get good reviews, but I have no idea how they compare. The words they use don't mean much to me. Would they be compatable? The "attractive vinyl veneer" does not sound like >£100, though Amazon have them for less than this"

...any pointers, please?

So, thats what my sister is using now.

Any clues on the speakers?

TIA

I suggested jbl control ones and a small sub ... but there literally hundreds of alternatives ....assuming cost to be kept to the absolute minimum.

some small dali's, mission 780's, dynaudio audience 40/42, AE-100, tannoy revolution r1, monitor audios.. etc etc etc

the list is almost endless

rouigly short listed...

"1. Cambridge Audio S30 (~£120). Good review for midband and treble and bass not bad (considering). Dimensions ideal, BUT they come with a grey front not black and the rest of my system is black....

2. Q Acoustics 1020i (~£139). Well integrated sound but lacks verve. (Do I want verve? - not sure). Dimensions good.

3. Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 (£~150). "Best under £200". Dimensions a bit tall but might cope. I was keen on these BUT they have curved sides, so putting them on their sides has to be a no-no. I want them to sing, not dance!

4. Tannoy Custom F1 (~£100). Good review for the price, but a bit tall.

5. Dali Lektor 1 (~£250). Good reviews but does "brilliantly vivid and rythmic" code for rather bassy and brash? Lots of verve - great! But people seem to like them and the dimensions are right. Not too fussy about position, which is good (poor things). I presume that the review will be a bit more critical because of the slightly greater price tag.

Maybe I should add

6. KEF C1. Seems to be a good make, dimensions just about OK. No What Hi Fi review though. But cheaper at £120-140, so maybe poorer quality."

mission 780's? tannoy R1's, AE-100, should be able to get any of those for about £100 and all sound good in their own way.
