I was with Virgin mobile but none their handsets were suitable.

I have now bought a Sony K300i which has everything I need and is a very good quality phone. However its Orange.

How much does it cost to get the shops to unlock the phone? Is it legal and are there any risks involved? Idealy I would like to use my Virgin sim card in it.

Oddly you always see this service on the market, might be worth a punt. Put another way you can't use it right now so whats to lose?

Well I could change my number and stick with Orange :) As I already went over budget with the phone (it cost £60 and my max budget was £50) it might be best to leave it.

I will buy a data cable with the money instead so I can get start writing some crappy J2ME games.

I've had phones unlocked a few times. It's no big deal other than that you should back up your address book first. There's no risk involved. It takes a couple of minutes and shops usually charge between 10 and 15 quid. As for the legality, that isn't for you to worry about. Nobody is going to arrest you for being in possession of a SIM-free phone!
