I picked up a modded cd player, but one of the channels is making a noise it shouldnt! The left channel works fine, but the righjt channel gives the sound through the speakers similar to the sound you get when you turn off the power amp and it starts to crackle and go quiet - it is also whirring in and out as if its trying to get the source through, going loud and quiet...i changed the rca plugs around prior to this and then it started - Ive looked at the phono sockets inside, but cant see a thing.....Is this something caused by a dry joint or crack or does it sound more sinister? Any tips on who to approach to fix it..i want to try and retain the parts inside - if they still do them....cheers banpe

whats the player ?

it sounds like a cap thats not holding its charge or being charged ...

nah..., its "not fit for purpose" under the sale of goods act if I'm not mistaken Andy.

You should have some redress here.

I stand corrected...

after some digging... goods bought second hand do not have to be "fit for purpose", only "as described" If the goods were not as described, you can return the product to the seller for a refund but this must be done swiftly.

if you want to pop up with it I'll take a look ..can't promise to fix it
but it will only cost you your petrol and any parts if I can ...

whats the unit ?

pm sent Z, the unit was second hand smeag, and was fine when he left it with me! it conked out after about 1 day after..pisser! Ill pop up to Zanash, but does anyone know of companies that specialise in mids ? I mean mods? to cd players and repairs when they go wrong... someone mentioned a place in scarborough calledaudio links a guy named Paul - anyone know of him?thanks

Ive just had a tinker and I ve found out the following...it is only one channel for sure. It sounds as if a heartbeat at about 100bpm is going on in the channel thats faulty with a "whoomph, whoomph" sound....this allows the song to be played but keeps fading in and out very quickly - like a wah wah effect on an organ (vibrato?) Reginald Dixon eh? I stopped the cd and switched the unit off by the switch on front panel..(mains still in) the "heartbeat" continued to be heard in speakers after being switched off, and showed no signs of fading - but then stopped when plug was pulled.....any ideas???

sounds like breakthrough from the power supply, could be acap dsicharging or mains leakage, a bad ground path, almost anything.

I suspect that its an opamp in oscillation...but would need the unit infront of me to be 100%.

So one channel has a problem rather than both ...which suggests the faulty channels mods may be the issue .....though I've been known to bark up the wrong tree ...

I do need the orginal model number as I have a fair library of service manuals ....

do you know what mods were done ?

regulated conversion board with b brown op amps and some type of pre amp built and modded by lfd to mistral player - pm sent i dont know how much of the sony is left!....iTS MY FIRST MODDED PLAYER - AND MY LAST!

its frustrating ....but a sensibly modded unit can last years

had a chat with lfd ..... interesting they only did a couple of these and only one ended up at AL.....so you must have that unit.

if its behaved for an hour and then misbehaves after you did something ...it suggests that it should be redemable [famous last words !]

did you get my email ?

Well.....andy popped over this morning

he'd sent some pic of the internals so I knew what to expect....

hooked up to my dac the cdp was fine ....[the transport and dac was ok]

hooked up to the pre the sound was rising and falling in about 1 second cycles...so it was the output stage misbehaving

The hard part was working out the whys and wherefores of the previous mods ....

It appears the previous owner had a pre amp board fitted [the sort you could pick up from maplin].

The obvious thing was to remove this.... nine solder joints un done and four made ...switch the cdp back on through my pre....it now runs perfectly no cycling of the volume ....

So a great result.....

the down side could be the increased output into his pre ....but four well chosen resistors will sort that out.....

I also took the time to give the original modders LFD a ring and found that the opamps fitted were ne5534 so at a latter stage these could be swapped for bb opa 227's or better.

Job Done, by Pete - the gain is absolutely fine - I cant believe it, it has only dropped by a fraction, so instead of turning vol to a max of "quarter to"... it now goes to "20to....." the hour - no worries. I dont get what that thing did, as the increase in gain is really marginal and the sound is improved with it gone. Thanks for sorting it out (it took nigh on three hours)im really chuffed with it, sounds great....There was a bit of a difference hooking up my gear after listening to yours(being much cleaner and lovely on the vocals - it seemed more lifelike) those speakers are something else for the money ! I could have spent a few quid getting this fixed by the company that carried out the mods, so thanks again ..top man!
