Hi all, im currently running a musical fidelity x dac v3 which also has a little pinkie
power supply with it,

Now im thinking about modding it myself, there seems to be an audiocom mod
also www.rock-grotto.co.uk/xdacv3modifications, parts are also fairly cheap, but
im having problems with some components as to where they are in the card,
what is the best way to get started in understanding the circuits, and what
would be the best mod to undertake cheers ocean.

On the MF stuff the place to start is the power supply section. My experience revolves around the phono stage. Using the Rock Grotto for inspiration I replaced the caps with Panasonic FC's, the diodes with fast recovery types as used on the site and bypassed them with the appropriate value cap. That will open up the sound a fair bit. I did the signal caps after and for me the results were more subtle but worthwhile too. I used a Pinkie and it worked well but it did die after 18 months or so (on permanently during that time).

I've moded a number of these ...

don't bother with the overpriced commercial kits or builds ...imo

firstly its a peice of cake to build a decent psu ...the hard part is choosing a nice case ...

as the psu is 12v ac all you need is a big ..150 va 240 to 12v torroidal

mods ...fit sockets for the opamps then you can just drop in chips till you find the one you like

swap the rectifier diodes for schottky 30dq10's [you may be able to get away with smaller ones]

replace the very nasty rac sockets and silver wire to the board ...

remove the dc blocking caps and change for the best paper in oil you can afford

power caps /smothing caps ... its hard to beat panasonic fc's and elna stargets for the price ..

if you want more info pm me
