Do a little more investigation first. Does it always skip in the same place on the CDs? My old CD63 started to skip consistently at 38 minutes into any disc. A quick clean of the laser rail with GT85 and it's been fine in the 9 years since.

This has been covered a few times here (and on PFM ) before, so do try using the search engine for more details :)

In essense, it's really simple with the CD63: if it's only skipping, try cleaning the rails the laser sled runs on with a Q-tip and some meths. The factory-applied grease hardens with age, which inhibits the sled's ability to traverse - the dead giveaway is if CDs only skip more toward the end of long sides. When cleaned, re-lube the rails with a silicone based grease - even Maplin sells one, cheap.

If you want to diagnose CD63 transport errors here's the full service manual procedure: turn the player off, then back on holding-down the 'Stop' and 'Play' buttons; then step through this procedure:

If you get Error 2 a lot - then replacing the laser mech is dead easy. It's a VAM1201J or equivalent you need, about £20 from Dalbani.co.uk or others, and the procedure is the same as this:

    HTH!

PS. If you are in this far, try this too... ;)

Well guys thanks for the advice I took it all apart without incident -The laser mechanism shaft was quite yellowed and the mech was not too free running. I cleaned the shaft as suggested and greased it put it all back. Its been running faultlessly for an hour or so. Prior to this it would skip at least once every minute. So Im hoping this fix will last.

The worst part was removing the laser drive motor and worm as it was stuck to the carrier with a sticky thing -With some care It prised off OK I wasnt sure if this was removeable or not this made the shaft cleaning excercise much easier.

This CD player belonged to my twin brother who was involved in a fatal canoeing accident just over a year ago. Like me he was very much a music fan so it is brill to get it running properly.

    Thanks again
    Andy
