Well I couldn't resist it, and have ordered a new version of Dereks NOS DAC.

Apparently the new one has re-clocking built it. How it compares against other options on the market, well I'll find out in another couple of weeks.

That would have been tricky Tony as the "original" NOS DAC doesn't have a clock other than what's built into the CS8412.

Micahel.

Did he implement a Asychronous Reclocker between the CS8412 and TDA1543?

The new NOS arrived this morning. Haven't had the change to listen yet, will be doing so tonight. As it's new, will probably need burning in. I'll give feedback when I'm sure it's settled down.

Well Asychronous reclocking can be an easy mod on the 12S lines if you use a cruddy transport.
If you like the effects of Asychronous reclocking is down to personnel taste, it will probably make the TDA1543 sound more lively.
The bass should sound different too, I just hope the crystal oscillator is good quality as well as its supply.
The frequency will probably be around 50/100MHZ if it is Asychronous Reclocking

Go on then WM, whats the PLL mod?

Whats the C/R value of the PLL on the nos then? Been a while since I played with a 8412, is it pin 12? or 14?

Sorry about the delay chaps, been rather busy.

Clearly the new NOS is not yet run in, but certainly sounds a bit good out of the bag. The case is a good bit bigger, nearly twice the size in most dimensions. Don't ask me what's in it, haven't got a clue. The best bet would be to check the specs of the unit on Ebay.
In use, well whatever has been done certainly changes things. It's a lot less "laid back" than NOS1. In the bass area, there's more of it and the definition is considerably better. Bass guitars are more pronounced and sound like bass units.
What it hasn't lost is the "natural" presentation of the original NOS.

Interestingly, I also had a visit from a chap from the PFM forums, who brought along his Pink Triangle DAC. Have to say that the PT sounded pretty good. On more boppy electronic stuff, the slight "enhancement" it appeared to add was rather nice. On more natural instruments (to me) it sounded rather flat in the soundstage and a little glazed. The NOS2 having a good edge on it.
