Excellent work Steve. I can't tell you how tempted I am to either have a go or place an order with you, but I will resist.

Sorry I haven't been able to take you up on your offer of a listen but I've not been feeling too well lately :(. Hopefully will be able to make it some time.

Very nice (again) Steve, wish I had the cash to buy a pair.

Notice much of a difference between the mk1 alnico HPD's and your mk2's?

Very, very little difference indeed. I had Mr Coco from Wigwam over at the time and we commented how the Tannoyist's CAN hear the slightest change between spec's.

Mine are bass tuned to my room so sounded more sorted in that dept - a taste thing really.
Other than that pretty much identical. These did have the same crossovers as mine.

The next pair have the older Gold's crossovers same Alinco Drivers) so there may be more difference there. I'll report back in about a month once I've built and tested them:)

Finished article cab#1 takes it place in the test zone.
I ran this HPD Alico mag and my 3828 side by side for a while - sounded great.

    without the grille

Take your pick - they sound pretty much the same

    Cab#2 takes it place

Oh yeah, here's a swatch of some colours to choose from - as many as Homebase, B&Q etc have also of course

Here it is again in daylight with the type of stain / finish marked.

I am really pleased with how these have turned out. Staining beautiful virgin birch was a leap of faith - but they came out well.

I made up some bass tuning felt panels for the internal rear - these worked really well - I made them removable - velcro so possible to tune for full bass for the larger room.

More importantly Alex, who came to pick them today up enthused over finish and sound on my system.

Alex just called me having listened to them for a few hours - ecstatic in improvement in sound over his Berkeley's.
He said it was staggering how much more composed and subtle they are esp. at higher vols where the Berkeley's just break down. Also lovely rich info full mid and lower bass.
He's been listening to them for hours and had a few hours to go by the sound of it!:)
    Shows how important cabs are

Next pair of cabs will start this week.

Wow.Those look really excellent. I only wish I had the room for something that much bigger than my uber-Lancasters.... I even have a spare pair of 15" HPDs idling in the office system... One day!

    Nice work.

These 2 sets were a joint run as the guys knew each other...

I just enjoy making things and seeing / hearing the results.
It's amazing hearing from folk how much better these are over the the cabs Tannoy put most of their drivers into of the period.
Waste of good drivers - the difference is startling!

Took Alex all of 10 mins listening to say "I have to have a pair of these"!

They look fantastic. I've no experience of these drivers, TBH I've no experience of DIY speakers either. But I do have some questions:

What kind of bass range are you getting in your room at the moment, and how do your bass attenuation strips / pads affect matters?

In case anyone is so interested in Steve's rather lovely cabs that they're looking for suitable drivers, I'm unhappily selling my 15" HPD's due to urgent financial crisis brought on by deathwatch beetles :( .

I'll put an ad in the classifieds in a minute, so look there for details if you're interested.....
