Your tale does remind me of some bargain hunter stories I was reading on the "Lansing Heritage" website in the States. There's canny buggers in California roaming around and finding old JBL studio monitors in rubbish skips or for $10 at garage sales. The sort of vintage stuff that fetches high $$$ on eBay.
I know what you mean - it's quite depressing to read of things like Thorens TD124's and Nakamichi Dragon cassette decks from goodwill shops! There are plenty of bargains to be had over this side of the pond, however, if you know where to look. As examples, from my own experiences over the last few years -
Original 1960's Goodmans Maxims - £1 from car boot sale, then a second pair about a year later for £3 from the local dump.
Thorens TD160/Thorens arm/Shure cartridge - £1 from car boot sale.
Absolutely MINT AR38s speakers - £2 from car boot sale.
Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4000 in original box - £4 from car boot sale
Monitor Audio Silver 5i - £35 from car boot sale
Acoustic Energy AE120 - £20 from car boot sale (had to replace a woofer on these, though!)
And the one that astounded me the most -
Rega Planar 3/RB300/Coral 777MC - £5 from the DUMP!!
