Not quite hifi I know but I thought I'd see if anyone has experience of 'musicians' amps....

My dad has a keyboard and he's asked me to have a look at amplifiers for him.

He wants something that will handle a small hall - like a village hall. It's not for a band or anything, just for am-dram stuff - singing ladies etc. so it doesn't have to be v. loud.

Any ideas? I know nothing about such kit.

I was thinking maybe a single box solution, like a guitar amp, but that might be too weedy.

Prefer new as I don't want the hassle of s/hand, given my ignorance.

Any advice would be most helpful... any websites I can peruse

keyboard and vocal amps aren't my specialty.

I can tell you an electric guitar amp is a bad idea however. Electric guitar amps make vocals and keyboards sound thick and muddy.

That's because they are effectively just a big woofer with no tweeters, to put it in hifi terms.

Perhaps a small PA system would be a first choice, or an amp for keyboards and vocals.

    whats the budget?
the laney cp12 seems pretty popular,as do he HK elias and makie powered stuff
    edit to add
arr youve got 200 to spend then its laney terrotery, yes its a monitor wedge, but can be put on a stand, can also be used for vocals, and a slave cab can be added later

Keyboard speaker cabs tend to be full range, often with a woofer, mid range and tweeter. As for the amp, just any old clean sounding amp will do. Guitar and bass amps are for those specific instruments respectively.

    thanks

would a separate amp and speaker(s) be better than one-box solution do you think, given the budget? I

(if one-box soultions exist for keyboards that is....?)

In the band I play in, our keyboard player uses the Yamaha MSR100 certainly loud enough for small halls and can also allow mikes and cd players etc to be played through it , it is also compact light and so easy to transport. New it is probably slightly above your budget but they do come up second hand.

couple of years ago i bought vox continental. as i don't play, my idea was to keep it as a piece of furniture, but it's a great instrument and i'm tempted to start playing. i am also looking for the proper amp for it.

Funky little thing really. Ideal for outside parties/barbeques too...
