It has been said in other threads that I made too many compromises with my sound system, I guess people are not used with looks and sound working toguether... It would be interesting to compare (leave the AV bit out of this thread)... ;)

Distances from center of woofer:

Room - 24'x 15'x 9' (golden ratio)

Front wall - 5'

Side walls - 3'

between speakers - 9'

listening position - 10'

Rather than try to explain, I figured I'd draw a diagram to show you what I have to deal with :(

My hifi resides in the dining room, as its too big for my bedroom and its either in here or up the loft (which is quite small, and I can't have the computer up there atm, and it may as well be an oven in the summer).

As you can probably tell, the above layout is far from ideal (its bloody awful in fact), but i haven't yet managed to convince my parents to re-arrange all the furniture to suit the hifi (and I probably won't, I'm off to uni in September and I'll take the hifi with me, hopefully then I can at least get proper positioning for stereo, if nothing else).

My entire house is poor for hifi or AV anyway, the living room is long and narrow, and every room is just a weird shape which would probably play havoc with the sound.

Well, I am disapointed, after all the arguments about my bad sound, I expected lots of better speaker placements than my compromised setup... :newbie:

I wouldn't dream of criticising your system, but for my taste the speakers are a little far apart compared with the seat, and IME I get treble bounce from a coffee table in a position like yours, which messes up the image

The general rule is distance between the speaker's tweeters = to 100% to 80% of distance to listening position, I am in there...

As for the cofee table, it is made of weaved straw, so it doesnt reflect anything, acoustically transparent I would say...

A coffee table can also help break up the first reflection if you have non carpeted floors. Just shows it's all about horses and courses.

The Audio Physics website has a great section on speaker placement and room dynamics

My room is roughly 3m x 6m x 2m, being a very irregular L-shape.

I have my Royd RR2s right next to the sidewalls, with the sidemounted bass ports facing the wall. They're equidistant from the front and back walls, and they're toed in to point directly at The Listening Chair, which is about 60cm into the room. That means about 75 degrees of toe in.

Anyone else listen like this? I've never got on with the speakers closer together than the distance from listener to speaker. I put the the speakers absolutely as far apart as they will go, otherwise it just sounds pinched.

If you dont toe-in you can have the speakers closer and still have wide stage...

The speakers close to side walls usually is a no-no, depends on the speakers and the walls...
