See my posts on the ''Consonance Basie'' in the DIY section.

Its a kit amp that Consonance will build for you for an extra £150 or so on top of the kit price. You can specify any level of componentry you want.

Being a kit, it punches at a level approximately I'd say.. oooh.... 3-4 times its purchase price.

Built up, it should come in around £500-£600 which is no indication of the quality of kit - point to point wiring and choke rectified pwr supply as standard.. ceramic resistors, paper in oil caps, silver wiring, stepped attenuator all options.

PM me if you want to go that route..

Cheers
Chris

Hmm, I guess the ATC CA-2 at £750 new is a bit underbudget... Even so, you may want to give it a listen - it's a lovely little pre, and IMO compares well with preamps costing an awful lot more. Actually, from my limited experience of ATC's flagship £3500 SCA-2 preamp, I'd say there isn't too much difference between them.

Dunc

P.S. - You may even be able to find one secondhand for under £400 - just think of all the CDs/LPs you could buy with the £500 you'd save! :MILD:

PRE30

Hi Ya-Boo,

I second Michael's recommendation (£900 might get you a dem unit). The PRE30 is a state-of-the-art design at a give-a-way price. This is the latest creation of Michael Bladelius, who also designed the class leading Pass Labs and Threshold preamps. Many preamps add glare and brightness, but the PRE30 sounds as transparent as a passive, producing silken high frequencies but with a fast dynamic sound.

I bought an AudioSynthesis Dax Decade directly from AS (David Heaton) for a good price (*), given that I reckonned his main marketing now was on the AS Dax Discrete. This is both a DAC and a pre-amp. David reckons that the best pre-amp is no pre-amp.

I'm very pleased with the music from the Decade which now partners the Meridian 602 transport.

I suggest that you email or phone him (PM me for details).

* I promised him that I wouldn't advertise what price we agreed, but its very good value given that no pre-amp is needed.
