As every single piece of hifi equipment [bar cables] contains quartz........it occurred to me does the the beneficial properties associated with this mineral lift ones emotions adding to the effects of the music ?

We have all heard about healing properties and its use in its use against negative influences.....just google and see what you come up with !

I keep a crystal or two near the computer and find it therapeutic....I also notice that they can if positioned correctly..glow !

Did you know that you can also tell the age of a quartz crystal by the amount of light its lost !

Thats even before you consider that a quartz crystal placed next to your computer monitor is vibrating especially if its the crt type. This property is used in providing a regular timing effect in many electronic applications. The vibrations frequency depends on the thickness of the crystal ...wonder what my 2.5cm crystals vibrating at ?

Quartz is so odd that it could lead you to think that there must be a greater scheme of things rather than pure chance. [I would have said God but some may find that offensive]

I assume you put a tea cozy over it when replying to the nay-saying masonry. :D:D

Graham.

isn't this supposed to be a fun place ?

Actually is relatively serious.....thought quiet how you'd be able tell if it was having an effect I've no idea......

I'm affraid its those long early hours when speculation and dream go hand in hand

ah - that would explain the ticking noise in my new amp then... ;)

Not something i believe in myself.

Thermoluminescence? as quartz does not fluorescence or phosfluoresce heavily unless under seriously strong UV lamps.

Not sure what you mean by the amount of light it has lost, as under normal conditions quartz does not have emission lines as seen in a spectroscope (like ruby for example).

I don't know, all of the things you mentioned can be explained by someone who knows. For example did you know that you can change the frequency of quartz by cutting at different angles to the crystalographic axis.

There are many interesting gemstones around, take Alexandrite (a form of chrysoberyl) for example. It shows the colour change effect which means under tungsten or candle light the stone will appear red, yet in daylight it will appear green.

Another weird one is if you have a GTD (garnet topped doublet) garnet on top of glass then cut to into a gemstone (a common old imitation stone). Irrelevant of the colour of the garnet the stone will look the colour of the glass. So a red garnet on a colourless glass base will look clear throughout the stone!

All can be explained pretty easily if you know.

Actually the glow is triboluminescence if you get the contact just right....like crushing a sugar cube.

Please note that I asked

"it occurred to me does the the beneficial properties associated with this mineral lift ones emotions adding to the effects of the music ?"

I for one have no idea ......does anyone ?

Dom...

I designed and help build a necklace, ring and earings for wifey using alexandrite [synthetic !] mounted in white gold. These were bought from a gem dealer in the near east.... cut stones are light blue but crimson in artificial light... rather than the natural greeny blue. Something close to 20 carats worth of stones if memory serves. But as you say very weird.

Dating the crystal is by optical stimulation luminescence..

which explains it better than I can...

Well it's as believable as your usual garbage about metalogy (sic) and the other assorted bits of snake oil you use the forum to push.

I am aware of this effect, but it would mean you would be rubbing the quartz for it to glow? Instead of a stationary piece of quartz emmiting light.

I would not know, i keep many gemstones in the same room as my hifi, as i collect them to help my gemmological study. Anything from andalusite to zircon. But personally i think this is an area where i am happy not to experiment. I am a very logical thinker and avoid things like this :)

The colour change effect is called metamerism. A good way to see it is to buy a pocket spectroscope. Look at a candle, or tungsten light, then look out the window. The two spectrums will be very very different. Tungsten light has very little blue in it. So under a tungsten light alexandrite which absorbs yellow light appears red. Yet under a fuller light such as daylight the alexandrite looks green.

As for the gemstones you had made up, they would be vanadium doped corundum. As they give the blue colour. Probably the most popular imitiation for alexandrite.

I knew this was a slippery slope.

First the guy introduces you to his cheap little mods.
Next he he suggests you try some of his cables.
Then, BAM! You're hooked on his Mood altering substances.

Just say "No", folks.

Intresting at least. It reminds me of the day I went to audition some Exposure gear at a local shop. The salesman asked me if I had a Quartz watch on. He said the quartz affected the laser in the CDP. Then he asked me if I had a cell phone in my brief case. Must take it out of the room. Affects the quality of sound.
I olbliged unwillingy and listened. Later he tried to explain that Linn had discovered that digital watches and cell phones mucked up the workings of the CDP. He was dead serious. I was laughing my ass off all the way to the next dealer Ah! To be be a Linnie priceless.
Brilliant!!!!

Crystals have no healing properties.
Crystals can not effect mood or listening pleasure.
Crystals are nice to look at.

Job done.
