Question about warranties - transferable?

Folks - thinking about buying a nearly new item from somebody, it still has nearly 2 years of guarantee to run, he bought it from his local Sevenoaks. Is the warranty transferable? If it developed a problem and I took it to my local Sevenoaks would they honour it? thanks.
 
All waranties are generally non-transferable.



Always a problem buying 2nd hand.
A shop may give you one of their own "warranties" but it wont be the same as the original maufacturers.

With ex-dem you should get a normal warranty.
 
All warranties/contracts have T&C's (terms and conditions), you will need to read through them with regard to any clauses that pertain to the warranty being passed on.
It is true that some manufactures/retailers do not provide transferable warranties, but again there are also those that do. The ones I have come across that do provide transfereable warranties only allow the item to pass to one other owner.
e.g: If you buy a pair of Von Schweikert loudspeakers the manufacturer warrants all passive loudspeakers for ten-years (with the usual clause voiding them of any responsibility down to customer mis-use). This warranty IS transferable to one further owner, but it is important that the initial buyer completes the warranty registration form and returns to the manufacturer so that all serial numbers can be traced throughout the chain of ownership.
 
One way round it may be to ask the seller if he would be prepared to help and take it back to the shop for you if the it developed a fault at a later date.

Although, would be an arse on if the seller lives a long way from you.

I think warranties should be transferable, afterall, its the goods that are guarenteed, not the person that buys them. Ho hum.

It depends who the manufacturer is - Bryston 20 year warranty is transferrable, most are not so check on the manufacturers website.
 
In this case its Marantz.... their website says the item has to be presented with original sales receipt to one of their appointed agents. It does not say anything about who..... so presumably this will be OK.
 
Is the product registered with the manufacturer? If so then you are at the manufacturer's mercy. If not then speak to the Sevenoaks store that it was bought from and ask them if they would be happy to honour the warranty. Get the original sales receipt from whoever you buy it from, not a copy. If you have any problems then I'm sure I can get it sorted or you.
 
I've just noticed that it is a Marantz product, this would be easy for me to sort out a warrant repair if you can provide the original sales receipt. Having said that, as long as I tell them on the phone its under warranty when I book the repair in they will do it anyway, they don't usually ask to see proof of purchase.

It is also worth noting that although they state to take it you one their appointed agents, retailers are not obliged in any way to handle repairs of goods that weren't sold by themselves.

The seller will provide the original receipt - if I decide to buy. Its a Marantz SA-11 BTW. Hopefully nothing would go wrong with it anyway, and I've always been lucky (touch wood) with hifi components and never actually suffered a real failure.

However, not so lucky with TVs - my situation has changed since yesterday.... our TV blew up last night and is long time out of warranty, so a new one is required.... and that's probably going to use up the funds! :mad:
