I've got three bits of kit (TT, CD, amp) currently sitting on a light-ish pine TV bench from Ikea with Finite Element ceraballs under the CD player.

I'm thinking about experimenting with some sort of rack and wondered what ZG members liked.

My budget is somewhere between 3 x Ikea LACK tables and perhaps 10x that much (so not a lot!). I would however be willing to part with more for something astounding.

Any thoughts and does anyone know if the LACK rack thing is still a go-er? (with the apparent change in construction of the tables?).

    Thanks

Try hifiracks.co.uk. Bespoke and good value. Mine made the world of difference to my Arcam system which had just been sitting on top of each other. To say that I was speechless when I put it on the stand is an understatement!

Have a look at this thread from another forum....it shows a whole host of cool looking racks.....

    http://www.hifisentralen.no/forum/index.php/topic,10420.0.html

By the way - what are you trying to achieve - improve aesthetics? Your use of the word " experiment" suggests that maybe you are looking at changing sound with a rack in which case as His Lordship has pointed out the money may be better spent elsewhere.

If you fancy a quick bit of DIY, you could try my approach. I bought some shelf brackets and a couple of chunky slate chopping boards from B&Q. Made meself a pair of slate shelves basically. Works a bloody treat!

I made myself one of these, the TNT flexi rack:

    http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/flexye.html

...cost about £30 and the nice man in b and q cut up the mdf for me. I think most racks are simply hideous if you ask me (which nobody was).

Thanks for the input and pointers.

As to what I'm trying to achieve...I'm just curious as to whether I can achieve a more pleasing sound. Only recently I moved my gear onto this cheap Ikea table and things got much better when I did that.

It's all sounding pretty lovely at the moment but I've become hooked on the little things you can do. For example, I'd never paid that much attention to the arrangement of cables around my equipment before but a bit of careful separating and distancing of the mess of ICs, speaker cables and power leads brought an improvement that I probably would have paid £1000 for had I been in a hifi shop. Basic stuff but stuff I wasn't doing.

Anyway, that's where this desire to meddle is coming from

hello, i went for a tnt flexy, made it with M20 rod and pine shelves from ikea. the cd player and the turntable are both sitting on granite slabs (worktop savers from supermarket) with everything on half squash balls. built it mainly to avoid vibrations getting to the turntable, works a treat, you can stick a record on and then mosh to your hearts content without the record skipping. the rack is sitting in floor protector cups with felt on them and the floor is cheap laminate, the rack seems really wobbly but it works a treat. think it came to £60 including the squash balls and the granite,

For some serious money, and a amazing result, speak to Max Townshend at Townshend Audio, he makes these wacky wobbly racks suspended on air bladders, the Seismic Sink HiFi rack.
Mad but brilliant, i'm lucky to own one of his 1998 prototypes :)

    Hope that works

the shelves were 3 or 4 quid each in Ikea and the rods are 1m each. i am using plastic washers instead of the rubber/neoprene recommended as i couldn't get them, the plastic ones were found in the plumbing section of b&q
