Guys I have an Pioneer DV-626D at the moment. Its a great player with a meriad of options however its getting long in the tooth. The main problem is the drawer or the mech as every single DVD knocks in there its noisy enough to disrupt enjoyment of a film.

So I wish to purchase a new DVD player. Heres the thing I own around abouts 7 DVDs in the 4 years or so of having a DVD player.

Now that I have purchased a LCD TV, I now want a DVD player that will be OK for light use, but will be able to cope with heavier use on the off chance I get into films ;)

So I have a small budget i.e. cheap as chips and might well hit the bay. What products should I keep and eye on. What DVD players a curious Hits because they are cheap and work?

I reckon on spending no more than a tonne to include delivery.

My other option is to hook the iBook up to the TV and use that, but no remote see.

Im selling my cyrus DVD8 with internal cyrus Q DAC upgrade option soon - boxed in black. My previous cyrus dvd spinner ran perfectly for many years. Bargain for someone.

Garyi - why not get the Pioneer 575 from Richer Sounds (£100 multiregion) and pay for Supercare?

Mind you, Pioneer aren't in my good books right now for DVDs! Their tape decks, laser disc players and tuners on the other hand lead me to suggest "better the devil you know" :)

um, well, there's a discussion going on in another thread regarding the reliability of modern dvd players, so whatever you buy, don't expect it to last forever! Spending a ton is wise in this regard as you won't cry too much when it dies two years later!

My default recommendations are the Pioneer 565 or 575.

As I say, better the devil you know - I think I just got a rogue 656 - hopefully a quick dust inside and some TLC of the Vyv/Young Ones "Right then - don't give me any jip, you b*stard" school of thought should fix it. If not, I'll joini the 575 club :)

Hi Gary
what type of inputs does your new LCD TV have?

It has DVI (Which I understand would be good?)

RGB and Video2 Scarts, Phono type video input and a standard PC input

I am not fussed about how it looks because it will be hid most of the time:

Hi Gary
If it has a dvi input do you know if it supports HDCP (Digital Copy Protection), and are the Phono inputs Red Blue Green if so then they Component inputs
I think that the new Samsung HD-850 would fit the bill, it has an HDMI output & supports SACD -DVD-A
HDMI is backwards compatible with Dvi so all you would need would be an HDMI to Dvi cable

But even if your TV's dvi does not support HDCP you could always connect it via the component outputs

You can get the HD850 for £99.99 from Digi UK

It supports HD but no component input just yellow input and two audio.

Even if the dvi input does not support HDCP you could look at the older Samsung HD-935 or the HD-745 as when you entered the multi-region hack on these it also disabled HDCP allowing you to use them with non-hdcp devices :)

I wouldn't know if it does support HDCP I don't see anything in the rather slim manual!

It might be easier to ask what to look out for when purchasing a DVD player lol
