Hello,

I don't know whether anyone can answer this (I know its a bit like how longs a piece of string) but I walked into a music retailers yesterday and was highly impressed with their in shop system.

This morniing I emailed the shop to enquire what they are using; I have to say I don't recognise much of it.

the answer was;

either the KRK RP6s or Quested S6s (which are both active studio monitors)

used with a KRK RP10S active sub-woofer, which gives the depth of bass

The music is actually on mp3 played directly from the computer through a decent audio interface (an M-audio Project Mix)

Does any one out there recognise those bits? What would a similar sounding system cost in my rather smaller (12'x17') living room?

Also can any one explain what the term "active" means please?

thanks,

David

Active just means the amp is built into the speaker. Most have separate amps for each driver and the cossover filtering is then done before the amps (filtering low-level signals instead of high level ones)

You should be looking at Musical equipment retailers such as Turnkey.co.uk.

Saw these and thought they were amazing value compared to what you'd get on the domestic market.

Actives really are great value for money. Shame the whole concept hasn't really caught on in the domestic mass market (with the exception of active subwoofers).

I find www.studiospares.co.uk is also good for pro equipment.

In answer to your question, it could not cost a lot. A pair of KRK RP6's cost about £300. The cheaper active monitors are indeed very good value for money. Also have a listen to the Alesis M1 Active MkII, I think they are some of the best for that sort of price. The next step up is something like the Mackie range Behringer do some that are similar but I have not heard them.
