Show us Your Kit!

how many months have i been here? and i still haven't posted in here? gee wiz :D

best get too it then...

G5 (iTunes & apple lossles encoder) (el cheapo optical cable)
& Marantz CD6000OSE (Tricord Pulswire)

-> Superdac (CA Pacific)

-> Marantz PM6010OSE (wet string)

-> B&W 602-S3s (on Attacama Nexus 9s)

The system may well be temporary ;)

Current Plans (when funds allow) are to flog the CD, the 602s & the stands, then use my faithfull old Cresta2s until i can go active with a decent pre.

So, Julian, are you only going to be using the HD stuff as a source, or are you getting a CD transport as well?

-- Ian

pretty much hd only i think. i may link my dvd player up to the optical in for emergencies once i've decided to bite the bullet and flog the cd5. but i don't think i've had a cd playing for nearly a month now so it just doesn't make sense to splash out on a dedicated transport at present. who's to say though hi-fi is a fickle hobby.
cheers

no raid :shame: however i'll be keeping all my cds so i can re-rip them to flacs if anything untoward happens. in actual fact i'll probably install another hd at some point and then back everything up to that and leave the backup unconnected.
cheers

Living dangerously dude.

I picked up a portable external 160GB firewire drive last week for £100, if I was you I'd invest in something like that ASAP.

I remember I "kept meaning" to configure raid on my home machine a couple of years ago, didn't get around to it. The obvious happened, drive failure, pain in the arse to recover it, I can tell you.

more than welcome robbo - bring the reluctant wizzard with you too, if you can prize him away from his blue glowing monstrosity :D
cheers

julian

Only reluctant if you have still got the CD5 Julian;)

Seriously, it's an interesting setup. I'm with you, having been spoilt by the convenience of a HD server, I find playing a CD (let alone a record) a real chore. If we "audionuts" can't be bothered - what chance the general public?

Hope to get up there soon,

Michael

My systems are as follows:
Stereo:
Musical Fidelity X-Ray - cd player
MF Tri-Vista DAC21
MF X-Plora - tuner
MF X-P100 - pre
MF X-A50 X 2 - power (tweeters)
MF M-250 X 2 - power (bass and mid)
MF X-Cans v2 - headphone amp with upgraded tubes
ATC SCM35s - speakers
Grado headphones

AV
Denon 3803 - amp
KEF eggs - speakers
Panasonic A360 - dvd player

I recently upgraded to the Tri-Vista DAC and am very happy with the sound. The level of detail is astounding and the soundstage feels bigger.:D

Sometimes an ATC CA2 pre (to be replaced eventually with a passive pre) into a Leak Stereo 20 for the ampage, headphone setup is Stax Lambda Nova Signature / SRM-T1s energiser.

It's different, but not as different as WM would like it to be. :p But yes, it's also better, for my tastes.

As to why, they were a good price secondhand and I fancied a change. As it turns out, the Harbeths really excel at the low volumes I generally listen at, and have a wonderful naturalness about them, plus they were a lot cheaper than the Active 20 upgrade I was considering, even factoring in buying a new amp to drive them.

They're speakers for slipper-wearing grown-ups, ATCs are a probably aimed more at party animals :)

Hi Ian,
Did you compare the Bronte to the Campion or Alabaster? (which I have and it's fab btw)

Andrew

hi Andrew, I needed remote, so didn't try the others (and the Orton was way over-budget). I've heard the Campion and Alabaster a few times, I like them both very much, just a shame they don't have any kind of remote control.

Fair enough. ATCs definitely like to be played loud. :cool:

I feel your pain - have you seen they've hiked the price up to £3700!!!!!! :eek: :eek: :eek: And £2K for the Active 10s! I remember buying my Active 10s three years ago for £995! Now THAT was a bargain! :MILD:

Dunc

Blimey. That means the 10s have gone up by £800 in a year. Should have held onto them a bit longer, might have made a profit selling them. :D
