Gasp, these got a good write up in hfc recently. Much better than cdm9nt.

I attended a demo last week at the 'listen up' store in Boulder Colorado www.listenup.com of the B&W 703 off of some Rotel electronics - I thought they were really good, quite a good marriage me thinks.

There's two CD players, one about £100 more than the 507, and one about £100 more than the 588

MeridianG91.jpg

Meridian has announced its first all-new range in ten years - the G Series. The line-up draws on the design element of the company's top-flight 800 Series, and comprises both pure audio and home cinema products.

This may be one range, but it comprises three 'families' of products: there are four disc players, two of which also incorporate preamplifiers, another range of surround processors, preamps and a two-channel receiver, and a final line-up of three power amps, including both stereo and multichannel models. The products can be used in conventional systems with passive speakers, or the players and preamp-type units can be used with the company's digital active speakers.

With industrial design by Meridian founder Allen Boothroyd, the new units come in full-width, all-metal casework in either silver or black with the usual Meridian black glass inserts, and have RS232 ports for system integration or computer control using a special Meridian program. The usual Meridian communication system is also accommodated.

Pictured is the G91 DVD Audio Player Controller, which combines an audio/video disc player, RDS tuner and digital preamp in a single box. It sells for around £3500 .

Looks nice. Is it available in black. Could be a worthy successor to the Alpha 9.

Without wishing to lower the tone, the aesthetics look like the bastard child of a 500 Series box and one of those Grundig seperates that they made in the early 90's (the ones they sold in Argos).

That said, I'm sure it'll sound fantastic, and that one-box pre/CD/tuner could potentially be a corker for the money.

simon,
maybe the 'G' designation indicates it's grundig heritage :D.

3.5k for a cd / tuner / pre hmmmm if i was in that market i'd go for an end of line tag aphrodite which looks much better and when your are compromising things by stuffing everything in one box aesthetics are the major consideration.

i wasn't that impressed with them in the flesh at heathrow although the dvd's picture was gorgeous - admittedly this was on a megabuck sim back projector so that may have had something to do with it.
cheers

Meridian prices

From the Audio-T website, the prices of the Meridian gear are:

On the two channel side the G Series includes two CD players, the G07 (£1,595) and the G08 (£2,250), two pre-amplifiers, the G01 (£1,450) and the G02 (£1,750), a receiver, the G51 (£1,995), and two power amplifiers, the 100w G56 (£1,495) and the 200w G57 (£1,995).

On the Home Cinema side there is a DVD-A transport and DVD-A player, the G98DH (£3,350) and the G98AH (£3,625), four processors, the G68D (£3,895) G68ADV (£4,995) G68AXV (£4,995) G68XXV (£4,995), and a 5 x 100w power amplifier, the G55 (£2,695). There is also a new learning system remote, the MSR+ (£85).

The G07 is about £400 or so more than the 507... wonder what makes the price hike justified?? Still uses 24/192 DACs and is spec'd similarly.

I showed the G07 picture to my wife and she loved it... she would not let me buy a 507 as its even uglier than my Arcam Alpha 9.

I suspect exactly the same justification as Arcam used for the FMJ CD23 which was basically an Alpha 9 in a much better all-metal case. Hi-tech casework costs a lot of money apparently.

Anyone heard the new meridian gear yet????
I "heard" the new AV gear at Heathrow but since it was in the lobby I couldn't get a good impression. Looks nice though.

When will Meridian start making sensible remotes instead of shipping a PC Keyboard with every bit of kit?

Michael.

I preferred the look of the 500 series, which was extremely elegant in the flesh. The black version of the new stuff looks a lot better than the silver, but I thought the new buttons felt a bit cheap and flimsy compared to the old.

Saw them at Heathrow, didn't hear them, but they're unlikely to be anything other than good. Meridian make very good CD players, no question about it.
