This is just on my dads crappy midi system, not all turntables do it do they? With the volume turned down the sound of the record can be heard quite loudly. I dont remember it always doing it though... Whats going on?

Dont tell me it bothers you ... surely!?!??! - its whisper quiet, right?

NB
its normal.

I can confirm my Pro-Ject Debut II does the same thing. As I've heard other decks do this, it's not something I'd worry about.

Ahh - but at least vinyl's "primitive ways of working" produces music, whereas almost all CD players produce a nails down chalkboard scratchy harsh mess - perfect sound forever my ass!
:duck:

Yes 'tis true. I suspect how loudly it does it is gonna be down to the cart/arm being used and they definitely vary in terms of loudness.

The Rega/Shure combo on my Michell does it and my Dansette does it a lot louder - maybe something to do with the cart and/or its tracking weight - obviously the Shure tracks a lot lighter than the compass point on the Dansette. I've never come across a deck that doesn't.

Cheers guys. It just seemed a bit louder than normal. i.e could hear across the room about 15 feet away well enough to hear the notes playing albeit tinnily. Maybe I'll get a new needle for it as it didnt used to do it as badly as this.

Good idea. I'll bet a new stylus would get it back to normal.

Excuse me, something in my eye. All this talk of stylii is upsetting me for some reason ...

W-a-a-a-a-h-h-h-h

I dont want to admit to this, but I remember a midi system that took shelter in my house once, being perfectly okay to listen to at night without turning the volume up at all. I think it must be a skill that only plastic arms / carts have, because both my P3 and old Project deck were much quieter.
