How am I supposed to fit the pulley onto the motor if pushing down on the shaft can damge the motor as the instructions state?

I think that the instructions are cautioning against ramming the pulley down too hard against the motor. It's best to push the pulley firmly down until it's not quite all the way down, which I find quite straightforward. It does no require much force. Just be careful that you don't exert any sideways force to the motor shaft, as it's quite easy to knock off true.
