Should I get another Usher R1.2 and monoblock my system? Winter is approaching and a pair of class A blocks will keep me nice & warm! Or, I could get a PS3 to match my 360. Or should I get new speakers? Wouldn't mind trying some Gallo 3.1s...

Perhaps I could try a mains regenerator? An offboard DAC (), reinstall my old marantz tuner?

Just seems like an awful waste just to leave it lying fallow. An audiophile needs boxes. Lots of them!

Not sure that the spare shelf on the equipment rack will be the ideal location for the speakers;).

My vote would be for DAC and Macbook.

Why is that people can't put a cd into a cd player now?

Speakers did it for me.

Well one can still use a CD player if one is happy to compromise ultimate sound quality.
Keith.

I do believe that now it is perfectly possible to get better sound quality from a computer and dac, than from a cdp, and that is from cd, not even high resolution files.

I've yet to hear it.

Can you recommend a computer/DAC combo that will kill a high-end CDP?

I think you will find the answer to that question is:

A Macboook, a Weiss Firewire Dac and an IPOD touch to control them. It's the future doncha know? :D

EDIT: That wasn't a trick question was it?

that wasn't a trick question. I have a macbook pro an ipod touch and a high spec DAC. why do I need a touch for control?

You don't 'need' an ipod touch, but it means that you leave the macbook near your hifi sit back and control everything with the ipod touch.
Keith.

Has anyone here compared this combination to a proper high-end CDP? or is this just 'the word on the street'.

I'll warm up my Nagra CDP and compare it tomorrow. I rarely use the CDP because my TT absolutely KILLS IT!!!!

I've never heard digital come anywhere close to vinyl. I have what I think is one of the better CDP and that is just OK compared to my vinyl setup, but a close friend has what is considered one of the best CD players around (DCS 3 boxes). My VPI system outperforms the DCS stuff in his and my system. He has just purchased a Walker Audio TT and it'll be interesting to find out what he thinks about digital after that.

I believe that five Walkers were put up for sale in one week after Jon Valin's review , of the small TW/Walker proscenium comparison.

Better sound.......?

Thats why we are enthusiasts, surely.

To be pedantic, that wasn't the question. DT asked what box can he get to fill an empty shelf, not how can I get an improvement in sound. Enthusiasm is overrated. Oneupmanship is where it's at (what ever that means) :D.

Well having looked at some "best games on PS3" websites, I won't be getting Sony's latest wunderbox. The quality & range of software looks pitiful. GT5, MGS4, Tekken 12 and a host of rather average looking FPS.

On reflection, I'm not sure I need a mains purifier. The TT has a seperate PSU. The Usher draws about a billion Watts from the wall. The MF is choke regulated. The Shanling has PSU mods and a passive clamp on the mains cable.

Don't need any changes to the TT. It's perfect.

SO that leaves me with speakers. I really want to try some Gallo Ref 3.1s. Or maybe those Mordaunt Performance 6s. Problem is the Xenons don't have any boxes and the last pair that went on here, went for peanuts :-(
