Subwoofers

I've one in the loft [unpluged] so no not in mine!

Sounds impressive with AV though that extra bass kick to big bang movies.

Tones what are you using and how as this is exactly what I was thinking about.

I have AB1s but was thinking of getting proper stands for my 35as and maybe a decent sub.. Any thoughts?

it really does depend... i remember demoing some £150 Mordaunt Short standmount speakers, and trying the Mj Acoustics Pro 50 to help the bass extension, which it did, but also sounded very musical and articulate and believe it or not, improved imaging.

Having said that, most subs we have- Mordaunt Short, Yamaha, Wharfedale, Eltax etc are good for bass slam in movies, as suggested above, but do more harm than good for music.

IMHO

I made mine - see the DIY section at

Whether this qualifies as "decent" in hi-fi terms I don't know - I like it, but then, I'm notoriously undiscriminating and easily pleased (I'd never make a real audiophile - thank goodness). Prior to that, I had an old Yamaha NS-W1, now honourably retired.

As you know the AB1 is only a bass augmenter, only going down to about 60Hz -3dB. A few who use AB1's also swear by REL, but occasionally swear at them because of integration problems.
I would join the LS3/5a Yahoo group and search the archive. You'll find lots of good advice there.

A good subwoofer can make a difference but none are plug and play. They take time to set up properly and need to be placed correctly in a room. If you can hear them, they are way to loud.

Are they essential - no. Can they improve sound quality - yes.

L It is virtual heresy to talk subwofferrey on LS35a I'm sure!! Have posted there never the less..

My point being that if I did this I'd have to go with high level connections and I'm just wondering if on my real world budget subs are a good music option..

Also is the difference between high and low level sub connections major or no?

Sub are often discussed there. In act Jo Ki how is probably the most respected use there uses subs.

His methods differs and he has discussed this many times. He may chime in or just search for the Jo Ki Method.

FWIW when I had a sub the high level connection was better IMHO.
