I've listened to a pair and I liked em... so much I want a pair.
I have also listened to a pair of Dorsets - a sort of pre-runner to the D700's as they are 1 X 10" dual and 1 X 10" woofer but in a simpler baffled / ported box.
Here's what someone wrote about the the Dorsets back in 2006 on another forum
They sound superb. They have bass ,they have a beautiful midrange and a very sweet top end. A total bargain! Especially when you consider how much is paid for Golds.
I'm told that generally the bigger drivers are better still but they really do need huge cabinets to work at their best, and I mean really huge. I believe this might be a byproduct of their sensitivity but cabinets the size of a washing machine are considered too small for 15" ers!
One work around for this problem was to use corner loading and the corner cabinet designs apparently achieve really good performance without talking up half your living room. The Tannoy designs though are very old fashioned looking as well as expensive (check out the pair of corner Yorks on ebay today) so best bet might be a cheap pair of HPDs dropped into a custom built corner cabinet with a modern finish of your choice."
The D700's are just about wife friendly enough to get under the radar - Berkleys, Canterbury's, FSM's (haha) will just not get in the lounge...
