Tannoy Westminster Demo

I thought they said "never again!" after the problems they had getting these huge monsters through their front door.

I really enjoyed the Westminters the last time. Anyone up for it?

Hi,

I would love to go but can't make it.

I have seen that you also can listen to these speakers at;

Rochester Hifi on Thurs Dec 6th
Heatherdale Audio on Thurs Dec 13th

There is an ad in the latest HiFi World.

I heard a pair at the High End exposition in Munich this year. It would be nice to listen to them with other electronics though.
Does anyone know what amplifiers and CD-payer will be used?

Hi Titian,

Are you planning to go?

I can't answer your question. I guess it'll be fed by whatever Walrus have available and find appropriate. Thorsten can probably remember what they used in the last demo that we went to, if that helps at all.

Got the following reply from Les:-

"The Westminsters will as usual be impromptu upstairs driven by either the Shanling MC-30!!! or the Jadis DA50 Class A. The Canterburys being downstairs will be driven by Air Tights supported by sources like the Brinkmann La Grange and if we can get it in time Thorsten's AMR player."

Anyone decided if they are going?

Dev,

unfortunately I can't take for this month two days off from work. It would have been interesting to hear how they perform on Jadis instead of those Accuphase in Munich.

Westminsters were hooked up to a vintage spectral CD player and PureSound 203 amp. But they were upstairs in what seemed like a corridor but was actually a room made to seem corridor sized by the sheer size of the speakers

Canteburys were downstairs in a dedicated listening room.

Only had a cursory listen of the Westminsters. Longer session with the Canteburys which were hooked up to a Brinkman deck, AMR cd player and Air tight pre and power amps.

The bass on these is awesome. Lots of it, clear and distinct, no boominess etc. The mids seemed a bit "congested" - lacking in clarity/detail. I personally don't think the Canteburys are worth the money (£9,500) Some Tannoy supertweeters were also connected up (£1200).

The Westminsters on the other hand are probably worth a longer audition but in better circumstances - i.e. better room. You will need some room though as they are big

As an aside, Les was gushing about the AMR Cd player (which is saying something as he is a vinyl only kinda guy)

What is the current RRP of WR?

Slightly off topic, today I've heard a really outstanding speaker built around the similar driver to the one used in WR, with RAAL ribbon used above 10khz for supertweeter duties. a 230 liter cabinet is a 320lb monster made out of solid walnut. i've never heard such a stunning clarity and transparency from a tannoy derived speaker - it just assured me once again how important is a cabinet quality for tannoys.

That's an interesting speaker Anub.

It makes a refreshing change to see a slightly new twist on something old (but good).

The cabinet volume and ports all look 'old' the box shape looks ''wilson benesch'' and the supertweeter, well, it's something the 15" tannoy dual concentric benefits from IMO.

My experiences of horns that do 'mids' (horrible generalisation this) is that they don't do 'much' beyond about 14khz. I don't know or pretend to know why, but I approve of adding a supertweeter. A ribbon will give the extension, but I wonder about the alternative of using a high frequency horn over the top, keeping the horn-theme present. hmm.

I like the cabinets, which look like they have a nice veneer. I wonder if it's solid wood?

What do they go for?

oh here we go, here's one question... answered meself.. " The finishing of the cabinets is done by using exotic veneer, natural oils and waxes. "
