Just doing a bit of window shopping today, when I was lured into shop. They had about 50k worth of musical fidelity gear just in the window display which was about 5 foot high.

2 x Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista Power
Musical Fidelity KWP Pre-amp
Musical Fidelity Tri Vista SACD
Musical Fidelity Tri Vista amplifier

Went inside and my eyes locked onto what is the most beautiful speakers I have ever seen; Sonus Faber Amati Homage. These beauties were being fed by

2 x Krell FPB 700 CX
Krell KCT
Krell CD/ SACD

Maybe it was the room but they did not impress me for a 60k setup.

i think this is one of the big problems with megabuck systems... your expectations of them are so high that they'll never live up to them.

how exactly did the system you listened to dissapoint?

cheers

Well to be completely honest there was a chap who was having a demo of the the sonus/krell system. I just happened to walk in and had a listen.

This is the first 7k + system I have listened to or seen and I would put it down to the system not sounding involving. It sounded very precise and accurate but not foot tapping.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Julian, although I've read about the laws of dimishing returns on hifi. I somehow still expected this system to sound X times better than mine.

WM how you doing mate?

Mandeep,

was the dem in a separate room or just in the main shop area? If it wasn't in a proper dem room, it just goes to show how easy it is to sell this kind of stuff to people with more money than sense who dont know any better :newbie:

Cheers Robbo

Sounds like it was doing "hifi" rather more impressively than "music" from the sound of it!!

I have been to a few HIFI shows and the high end stuff has never realy impressed me much either. The £2000-£5000 stuff has always quite amazed me with their deep and timely bass, and great resolution, but I think also the best thing about these sysems is that I can one day imagine having one. However a £60k HIFI, even if I had millions of pounds to spend I would rather just have a £10k max HIFI system and spend £100k on music. I could have every single record to ever hit the top 100 charts! My first HIFI seperates system was a £200 Ariston setup and JPW310 is. This system blew me away compared to my £100 mini system the difference was amazing, my current £500 setup is much better than my ariston is terms of musicalty but its probably not £300 better.

I think that once you get to these sorts of price levels the customer is chasing a very specific sort of sound, and it obviously wasn't your idea of "right".

IMO it's easier to combine budget or midrange HiFi and get a reasonable sound. We've all seen threads where products are recommended for a certain type of sound. But as price increases I think HiFi products become more picky about their partners - certain combinations dial in and sound right together but a small change in the set-up can throw the whole sound off totally.

Perhaps the Sonus Faber's don't work well with Krell or there was something else amiss in the system, or it just wasn't your kind of sound. It's all academic really until you've got that amount to spend :)

Did the bloke get his Platinum card out them?

I have some experience with these mega priced systems. To my mind the biggest problem is people just throw these systems together. Most audio folk will try and match items to each other so the cumulative effect is greater than the sum of the parts but some some unknown reason once people start to spend big money they dont bother. It is just random shopping for components.

On the other hand, some of this equipment just sounds bad. I remember going to a demo by Infinity, 20 years ago where they were showing off their £40,000 speakers, they sounded dreadful. The other problem with expensive equipment is that it is often way to complicated (multiple speakers etc) and so the quality is often lost.

I have listened to some fantastic high end stuff and yes, diminishing returns do play a part but most of the time the soul of the music disappears.
