In a world of pain
Well, I think so anyway.

I've been having a lot of MTB fun lately... I've been selling off vast numbers of old bits and bobs, and plowing the money into building a new singlespeed. My last SS was a commutery type one that I never used - parted it out and sold it. The new one is steel, going to have a 5" fork, discs, big fat tyres... oh, and everything in black. I'm even painting the non-contact areas of the brake discs. Yes, I'm sad, so what?

Finally we are getting some weather that's worth going out in - June and July were total washouts, and august wasn't great. September is going well though, and so made a trip to Coed Y Brenin with some friends.

And here's some videos:

What have you guys been up to lately (on bikes!)?

I gave up for a long time, now I have bought this, I just got to get fit enough to ride it :)

it is 24ins wheel so is nearly a mountain bike :D

the new project sounds nice btw.

well I've been rediscovering my Gitane road bike after a long period where it just hung on its hooks getting dusty.. When i bought it I went for clip-in pedals and shoes. Never got used to them - had a few spills where I couldn't get my foot out in time... After I had a knee cartilage repaired, the last thing I wanted to do was twist my foot to release, so the bike gathered dust. Finaly got round to changing the pedals back to good old platforms with cages/straps - and it's fantastic! In a wave of pedal enthusiasm I then changed my Diamondback Vectrapro's slippy pedals to DMR 600s, which are really grippy, and then my kids' pedals to some cheaper DMR clone... Pedals'r'us! :)

My pedal of choice is the Wellgo MG-1 (aka Onza Hognesium). Since breaking my leg due to a ski binding that didn't release I've been wary of binding my feet to things. The MG1s are light and very very grippy.

ahh the old ones are the best eh sadngrownun?

i too use flatties as opposes to those demonic clippy things. did the classic come to a stop in front of a pub whilst new to clippies. cue comedy slow motion topple and laughter from bud (yes bottleneck i'm looking at you).

been out less on my bike lately than i want - had a general cycle apathy but been doing lots of walking instead. really should make use of the last of the summer and my time off work before the nights draw in and i have to find a job.

usual haunts are chicksands and woburn sands so if you see a big overweight bloke on a black thorn enduro careening down some overgrown track screaming then come and say hi to the bruised bloody mess at the bottom.

Did a 60 yesterday out in the peaks, most of the peak district to be honest.

top tip: don't buy chammy cream with Almond oil in it if you are allergic to nuts.....

I didnt get much sleep last night.

I'm a twat, it's official!

after a month off the bike (and exercise), and half a stone heavier I'm just getting fit again - easing myself into the biking with some swimming and gym work.. which I really enjoy too to be honest.

fairly lame of me, I know..

Get some bloomin gears on it. It's a mountain bike not a crusty courier crapper !

Mud tyres... great for riding on the moors during the rainy part of the year (like June, July...). Hopeless on hardpack, tarmac, gravel, etc...

you can still buy porcs, a US company has just bought the mould rights from the onza trademark holders.

jules had some of those on his bike.

we've both swapped to Kenda BLue Groove and Nevegal.

It's simply the best all purpose all year XC tyre pairing I've had yet. I love them.

yeah, I had upgraded to some panaracer's that were popular at the time - tho, I forget the model...this would have been the mid 90's I guess...

I'm just using the kit tyres that came with my trek now...thay're ok, but I don't do any real clarty stuff these days...
