Turntable in a (reverse) spin

I have a Systemdek IIX with the off board speed control box. Sometimes when it starts up it spins the platter in reverse. It's easily fixed by turning it off and spinning the platter by hand the right way and then powering up again, but it's a bit annoying.

Any reason why this might happen?

And other than being a non-mechanical speed control does this off board box offer any other benefits?

No idea ...but I've heard about TT that do this ..its not uncommon.
