Hi all,

Right its time, ive got to the point where i am going to have to build some valve amps.

Im looking to build a system to power my MS700 and MS400 speakers that i use in tandem.

Ideally each will be driven by a KT88 based mono block, with a single pre amp stage controlling the lot.

I have a friend who is going to CNC machine the chassis for the amps with integral heat sinking fins for the powersupplies, and im quite proficent at soldering and general electronic construction.

All i need now is a pointer in the direction of a fairly foolproof, well tested and regarded design for a self build pre and mono block amps. Theres a lot of them out there and i'd rather not choose poorly.

Any suggestions?

Hiya

I've been impressed with these guys, and own one of their products.

This is their KT88/EL34 amp

Its not monoblock and wont require you to make a chasis - but it does have a dual mono layout.

For a pre - the new aikido basie looks fantastic. I have the 1st Basie and it sounds great. The new one promises more still.

Both of these designs are hard wired, and you can have lots of fun trying different caps, resistors, wiring, pots etc.

If I were moving away from tried and tested designs - I'd go for a copy of something of some magnatude - for example a duplicate of an audionote Ongaku. Not KT88 mind you.

Just a few thoughts and ideas.
