It may be nothing, but these caught my eye when I was in an unfamiliar lecture theatre at work the other day. Does anyone recognise them? They're large - about 3'6" to 4' high. Should I be contacting estates and making an offer? They've clearly been hanging there for years not doing anything.

I doubt they'd want to sell them and they are probably old and knackered so I wouldn't bother making an offer. Waste of time, imo.

PS. Please pm me the company's address and contact number.

My lord - a pair of boxy angels...

Please don't tell me what you get them for I might feel a
bit queezy. That's the pair I'd go for. I only got little ones cos I ran out of money.

Damn right, although I'd guess that someone on ebay would pay a few hundred quid for the cabs alone! Would be a bit of a bummer if you opened them up to find the drivers had been replaced by something else tho.

I was chuckling to myself last night when looking at this thread and SMEagols avatar, which is probably exactly the expression I'd have on my face if I found those beauties hanging about :D

Well I've done a bit more research, via Google, our AV dept., and standing on a table with a torch...

From looking at pics/dimensions I'm fairly sure they're GRF's (not autograph though, sadly). The drivers are still there (well some drivers are there - can't be sure they're the originals at this stage I guess but there's no sign they've been tampered with). According to AV they were working up until 3 or 4 years ago when they installed a new system. They left these in place because it was easier than getting them down. They're very dusty/grimy and have accumulated some paint around the edges over the years. They have a red metal Tannoy badge in the upper right corner of the grill - not sure if that will help to date them?

The good news is that in principle I can have them. Getting them off the wall could be a considerable technical challenge however as they're about 9' off the ground and secured to the wall with big feck-off metal plates and screws. I may have to wait until Xmas when some scaffolding can be erected...

I'm tempted to turn up at the weekend with a mate and a ladder, but I guess there's a considerable danger of damaging both ourselves and the cabs. (Does anyone know what they weigh?) Waiting til Xmas would give me some time to persuade SWMBO that I can keep them at least for a while.

Definitely wouldn't recommend it. I suspect they weigh around 60-70Kgs each, maybe more.

My GRF Memory cabs weigh in at 62kg.

You really don`t want to be trying to lift that sort of weight from ladders!!! otherwise you may just end up with a disaster on your hands.

Erect some quickstage scaffold tower to get them down These things must be worth at least £3k if they have the right drivers.

the Value 'i' would give to them...well, in No circumstance would i pay more than £350 for a pair of GRF's, but then, i would pay no more than £75 for a pair of LS35a's so was reasonably content to find a pair (mint) for £50 a few years back, they were owned by a guy who worked for the BBC and were given to him on retirement. In no way did i feel bad about handing over £50 for them, i'm no dealer, and so was Not looking to profit, the gent was also fully aware of their market value, and didn't care for it, and in 'my' good sense, neither do i, so when/if i pass them on, they'll go for £50, their worth to me...:)

If they are willing to give them away for free, you should collect them quite soonish before someone changes their mind ;) Lucky find indeed!
