Vinyl vs CD - preference or fact?

Only if you like them. - and if you don't you can offload them ;););)

As far as record vs digital goes its hard to choose between - if they are nice & clean & set up right vinyl is my preference but if the lp is scratched or uncleanable then CD wins out.

But I speak as one brought up on vinyl. I like the ritual & the ability to read sleeve notes without using a 10 to 15x magnifying glass.

Vinyl is experiential involvement with its own rewards for effort, care & persistence, whereas CD is totally devoid of anything experiential. Both can be good to listen to & you don't need to spend tons to enjoy it.

I couldn't agree more on this - Vinyl that is very clean and played on a TT set up correctly is my choice BUT for if the previous conditions are not met then CDs every time.

On the topic of VTF - I too originally dialled in the VTF using the selector on the TP16 on my TD160 and ran with it -listened to it for a few days and was never happy with the sound, picked up a set of cheap £9 digital scales from ebay that were being sold as jewellery scales and it tunes out that my VTF was nearly a full gram higher than the dialled in value. . Lesson learned.

The other aspect is on something like the TP16 arms the dial up goes in 0.5 gram increments with no inbetween settings.

With a scale you can set it at anything you need to.

??

It certainly hasn't stopped me!!

;)

Nor should it.

"Experiential" meant in terms of user / customer involvement with a process or product - a la Alvin Toffler who coined the phrase in Third World. ie not just experience through listening (which is all you get from CD).

Of course a lump of soft plastic with grooves in it is always going to better than a film with holes and pits in it sealed in a layer of polycarbonate.

Go to live gig. Go home... listen to you hifi. Does it have the same qualities? If not then it is not hifi.

Ooo... bite

If your hifi is a shitty PA and your listening room is cavernous with terrible acoustics it might just live up to the live experience

I've actually taken it one stage further in my never ending drive for realism - I charge myself £20 to get into my listening room and, after an hour or so, the neighbours come round and throw plastic bottles full of piss at me. Ah! the realism of it - just right!
