Vinyl vs Digital

So if you believe equally that vinyl and CD both have a place in modern music reproduction, does that make you a semi-vinylist :)

I believe in both too. They both offer completely different things and are both perfectly valid sonicaly.

I could not do without my CD player or turntbale.

This from here "MP3s and other digital files are nothing but a string of zeros and ones. How can the spirit, struggle and emotion of great musicians like Captain Beefheart, The Grateful Dead and Boney M be reduced to zeros and ones?!"

Boney M :yikes:

With advocates like this, who needs enemies?! ;)

"How can the spirit, struggle and emotion of great musicians like Captain Beefheart, The Grateful Dead and Boney M be reduced to squiggles in a piece of black plastic dust magnet which will add snap, crackle and pop (but not necessarily in that order) to the musical performance. And that's before we look at the distortion figures and compression of dynamic range?!"

but chris, it's been done that way for decades therefore it must be better just like those fizzing, glowing glass bottles that go pop every once in a while. just remember older == better and just for good measure $$ == music. there you'll never go wrong again.
cheers

Ah, so that's why you're a Naim owner Julian.

sorry mike i forgot you'd just taken delivery of a load of light bulbs. still i was being facetious when i made that comment (as if you didn;t know). there does seem to be a lot of reactionary knee jerking going on when it comes to valves and vinyl. don;t get me wrong i've heard some good valve amps (neils A.R.) and some decent vinyl too but i've also heard some unmitigatged shite from both camps. the same could be said of cd and solid state though it's just the continual spewing of sewage by the vinylistas that brings out the worst in me i guess.
anyway valves glow orange dont they? surely a blue glowing valve would improve the sound no end still at least your power meters are blue...
cheers

Gents, bottom Line here NO SOUL= Tact, I'm having to put up with this some one help me................................................
And at Heathrow, I finialy heard how awful Vinyl can be, it's dire when it's bad, easily as bad as the Oasis/Corrs (not mine :D ) I have.
But hey as plant says "Ramble on" :D

Tony,

you'd need to learn how to use it first:rolleyes:

It's like saying a Harrier's got no thrust or a Renault no vavavroom;)

Same with the vinyl. Learn how to use it properly and you will discover the soul of an angel rather than the angst of a nightclub doorman;)

Boney M suck!!!!

Mind you, if you want to recreate the spirit, struggle and emotion of Captain Beefheart, all you need to do is stick a cat in a bag and kick it up and down a flight of stairs for 50 minutes while whacking a guitar with a mallet. Bingo - one perfect recreation of "Trout mask replica". Yuk!

Vinyl sure DOES have higher distortion figures than CD, but not in the same areas; something to do with the harmonics or something (I don't understand it!).

All I know is I prefer vinyl, but I can't walk down the street listening to the latest slab of 12 inch wax; CD still has its uses (when AOL ones aren't under my cup of tea or beer!).

Bollox to CD:mad:

Get Radical. New music should be released soley on 200g vinyl for the music lovers, and also available to download as crappy MP3's (something like 64kbps) for all the plebs.

the vinyl pressings should be limited edition, creating a burgeoning used market.

Vive le revolution:D

You need one of those Soundburger portable record players, mate ;)

mike,
thanks for proving my point about vinylista's. it seems like you've actually gone one better, just like the ex smoker who now complains loudest when someone sparks up within 100 metres you've gone from the depths / heights of digital hell / heaven to the opposite end of the spectrum and are now villifying digital playback - i suspect to self justify the money spent / lost during the change ;)
in all seriousness my point is that neither cd or vinyl are perfect carriers of music, my problem is with those that blindly say that any turntable is better than a cd player - this seems to me to be the kind of bollocks that a 3rd rate magazine such as what hi-fi would spout when they have a vinyl special issue.
cheers

depends whether you want to listen to the music or a hifi system really Jules. For the latter, the CD player will suffice;)
