Wandering in the field....

they're ok like ;)

Good work trooper! How long did they take to get? I did some experimenting with flowers other night with various depths of field. Some turned out ok and others shite :D

My autofocus wasn't up to it as close as I wanted so had to go manual. erm.... forgot to put my contact lenses in first though :D

Had some interesting results with spraying wats through a straw onto them at slower shutter speeds too. Oh, and mistake number 500929392992..... Liked the way they were lit (MOon light and some soft lighting from house window), but forgot to turn the flash off!

Live and learn! :D

Again, good work! That's one bad ass lense you got!

Thanks. The lens was a Canon EF 135 F2L USM, with a 25mm extension tube for closer focusing. Didn't take too long to get... nice thing about the D30 is that you can shoot as many shots as you like without it costing anything.

Just a rather substantial initial out lay!

Is camera shake an issue with digital as much as with 35mm? Even with my camera mounted on tripod, there's still a little blut from pressing the button. Could always go for the timer, but much like the video, not figured that one out yet :D

I got mine for £550, which wasn't bad...

Camera shake is probably more of an issue because the resolving power of the sensor and the crop factor put more emphasis on lens sharpness and lack of shake. Those shots were hand-held though (but I'm quite good at hand holding!).

When using a tripod you really want to use a remote release and mirror lock-up.

A D30 for £550? I didn't know they had gone that low

A very nice Camera, the first digital classic IMO. Even with its 3mp it can still show the 5-6mp boys a thing or two :)

I'm using an Olympus E-10 myself - like it a lot allthough it doesn't have interchangable lenses. If the price becomes reasonable the new Olympus E-1 looks tempting, and since I don't have an existing Canon or Nikon lens collection that's not an issue for me.

Very very impressive then , especially the 1st and 2nd photos which are very sharp and detailed, did think they were tripod shots those ones. Nice!

Hmm, got any recommendation for digi cams which will take images as sharp and bright as the ones you've posted up Isaac? Prefereably cheaper than a D30 and no requirements for SLR.

I don't really have an avid interest in photography, just a point and shoot kind of person so it's got to be idiot proof :D. Getting a bit fed up of my 2 year old Canon S20 which seems to produce quite murky images in comparison to what can be produced these days with the more state of the art stuff.

I got it in april with a 9 month warranty for that £550. Second hand of course.

Problem with the E1 is that it is more expensive than the 10D, lower res, smaller (= higher noise) sensor, only 4 lenses available (vs over 50 current for canon or nikon), etc... The E1 may prove to be a worthy competitor, but right now, especially with IS, USM, etc canon and nikon both have the upper hand over olympus with that. The E10 is certainly a good camera... one of the best of that class of camera. Olympus just really missed out on the whole AF game...

Anyways, since I already had around £4k in canon glass and accessories for my EOS 3 (which I still have as well), wasn't any choice in it for me...

Henri-

Really any cam with a reasonable sensor and decent optics should do. DSLRs are now getting to the price of decent P&S anyway, like my D30.

Ones to look out for are the Canon S30 (low noise), S45, G2, G3.

Some of the nikons also (I used to have a coolpix 700, which was good for what it was), although the 5000, 5400 and 5700 are eminently missable. I'm most au fait with the canons, but don't pay a lot of attention to the P&S market. www.dpreview.com is the place.

I agree with your comments about the E1 Isaac - currently way too expensive to be a real thread to 10D, D100 etc. but an interesting way forward for digital SLRs - I personally hope it works out for them.

The 4 lenses they currently have would cover everything I need (allthough that telephoto is eye waterlingly expensive  ).

www.dpreview.com definitely the place to look. Best digicam site there is (and has pretty good forums aswell).

My wife just got a Nikon Coolpix 3100 (successor to the 775) which is pretty good. The Canons that Isaac mentioned and also some of the Olympus P&S cameras are excellent aswell (C-350 & mju-300).

Michael.

Indeed. Competition is very good for the consumer. Shame there's no competition for the EOS 1DS....

Hey Isaac, some lovely photos there, especially like the white butterfly which looks like a ballerina dancing fairy/ewok alien...
Insects can look so cool when you get them close up, they've got the strangest faces.
Funnily enough I've just ordered a digital camera as I hardly ever use the APS we've currently got. I can't wait to just take loads of pictures and experiment with it, something I've never done before.:D

Thanks, looks like a really good site. Particuaraly like the sample photos you can get to preview for each camera. :)
