Interested in getting one of these for Christmas, happy with an older Pioneer \ Denon etc. Price around £100 (lower the better), this doesn't mean £200!!

I live in Bedford.

Thanks, Tim

Does it need to be blu-ray/HD player or a standard one with upscaling?

If the former, I think you'd be hard pressed to get one for 100. if the latter, 100 gets you a lot of player.

One brand that has high specs but low prices is Oppo. They have a new model out for USD169 - but you would have to add shipping and if unlucky (customes & excise & VAT)

There are a plethora of standard DVD players from GBP12 supermarket models upwards

e.g. Philips DVP5980 for around 70 quid and this has a region free hack as well

I'd just try and get something that plays 'DIVX' , DVD-R's etc and other similar formats, so you can play stuff you may download off the net in the future.

With faster internet speeds and cheaper internet rates, it's easy to download the latest blockbusters and TV shows for free.

I care more about that than I do HD etc.

i have a lovely pioneer DV-656A

its a full universal player, does SACD, DVD audio, DVD, CD etc etc

it has component outputs, as well as full multichannel capabilities.

was top of its game a few years back for the £400 mark

i would be happy enough to let it go for £90 if you fancy it.

I have this one - it contains a better chipset etc that the newer ones...but doesn't support Divx tho - but it's a stonking player!
with a dac - makes for a great cdp too...

i can indeed say it makes a fantastic transport. I ran it into my cyrus dacX and was unable to really tell the difference between it and my cyrus dad3 used as a transport.

Its also very capable video wise, with a smooth rich picture. I guess theres a reason it was an award winner at the time. The only thing i can criticise (as was done at the time) that its casework isnt the most sturdy.

I simply fixed this by getting a mousemat, and a granite slab, and placing them on the top of the chassis to dampen it down. Made the player much quieter, any performance gains i cant comment on.

hehe..im just not using the player to its full potential really, and im considering a universal DVD/CD transport of higher quality next year, so happy to let this one find a new home.

Lol I don't think I'll be getting Blu Ray for £100!!! Upscaling is unimportant my Dad's plasma does this already. Will let you know on the Pioneer, I do like them but I'm not that familiar with that particular one... this is much better than work you know!.

Ta, Tim

well having investigated a little... im happy to let you have the pioneer for £80 posted

i dont think you'll find a better player for the money anywhere really. Its a superb bit of kit.
