Just tried rigging some speakers up to a dodgy amp I found in a back cupboard of a mates. Bad noises....smoke...orrible smell....no noise. Opened it up and can't see anything melted. I rigged it up to some Aiwa multi tweeter speakers and now only one of the 3 tweeters works and the driver is dead. What I done!!??

Sounds like you gave the speakers a nice dose of direct current and melted their voice coils. Are you sure the speakers were in working order before.

    thanks saab...dribbledribble.

Speakers were working fine until the smoking. They're my housemates. She'll be happy. Noticed the fuse for the speaker channel I used is wrapped in tin foil! So I guess you're right Chris. Easily fixable?

err......may i suggest therapy in the form of the following........
mark a wall with a large `X`, stand in front of `X`, bang head repeatedly on the `X` whilst saying loudly "I MUST NEVER DO ANYHTING LIKE THIS AGAIN" over and over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry Heavymental, you will only do this once. Try cash convertors for some of those Aiwa speakers - you only need 1 working right?

    Hmm yeah 2 lessons learned............
    Avoid plugging in shite electronics.
Tin foil is not a design feature.
Luckily she's not into hifi so any replacement will do as long as they go loud and look the part.
Pleased I didn't test the amp on my Epos' though:)

Not very Chris so I'll be looking out for a cheap fix. I'll have a look around for some of the Aiwa ones. Its not too bad as one still works....

Luckily she's living elsewhere at the moment but does pop around quite a bit. My other housemate didn't even notice one of the speakers was gone until I admitted my crime. Think I'll get away with it as long as I can find a suitable replacement.
This has been a long few days of bad luck. Driving along on Friday a van going the other way hit a traffic cone which smashed the front grill of my car. Fried the speaker on saturday and went fishing on sunday....not only did I not catch anything but I managed to lodge a hook in my mates leg. Ouch.
At least it wasn't my leg I suppose.

Reminds me of the time at summer camp when I swatted a wasp...

...straight at our Group Scout Leader's thigh...

...where it promptly stung him :D

For some reason he didn't find it as funny as everyone else did
